Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

Anyone know if Sony plans on implementing a crop mode so that we can shoot photos and/or video at APS-C too? Would love to see this come to the camera.

Video modes can be changed from full-frame to APS-C (super 35mm equivalent) if desired, and in this crop mode, the camera can support high frame rate 120fps shooting at standard HD resolution (1280 x 720p), creating a 5x slow-motion effect.

There is a 4k HDMI recorder that already exists, it's just not a field recorder. Blackmagic Design Hyperdeck Studio Pro is a rackmountable SSD recorder that records 4k from SDI or HDMI. It's $2k, relatively large and AC powered so it won't be ideal for most people, but seeing as all these shots are locked off static I could see them using this recorder to make the promo.

You could run it off a battery and an inverter and it wouldn't be much bulkier than a Red One.... but surely there's something portable coming.

Oh sweet! Thanks for the link~Morgan.

In video mode, the α7S can output 4K video[SUP]4[/SUP] at QFHD (3840×2160) to an optional external 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] party 4K recorder, and can record full HD (1920×1080) at frame rates of 60p, 60i, 30p and 24p directly to a compatible memory card. Video modes can be changed from full-frame to APS-C (super 35mm equivalent) if desired, and in this crop mode, the camera can support high frame rate 120fps shooting at standard HD resolution (1280 x 720p), creating a 5x slow-motion effect.

"The sensor reads out image data from every pixel, even during Full HD and 4K*2 movie output, and enables recording and output of Full HD movies at 60p (50p), 60i (50i), 30p (25p) and 24p frame rates, as well as output of 4K movies at a 30p or 24p frame rate, with both resolutions available at both full-frame and APS-C (Super 35mm equivalent) size."

weird that it can record 4K in aps-c crop

plus: this still doesn't mean you get to choose the crop it shoots with, it could be defined by the lens

Anyway, let's say the 4K uncompressed is 8-bit - according to what a few people have been suggesting about the 4K 8-bit out of the GH4, shouldn't that 4K 8-bit down-res to 2K/1080P 10-bit? I've never subscribed to that, however, according to the maths behind the whole theory, it does.

This looks good to me so far, but there could still be deal breakers...like bad rolling shutter, haven't seen any movement from the camera yet, have to wait and see on that one.
Not going back to D90 type jello though, lol.. so it's definitely something I need to see personally

On the GH4 this will be a 10bit output to a 10bit ProRes file.
On the A7S this will be an 8bit output to a 10bit ProRes file

so: 4K recorder, also capable of 720p120, under $2K

have we actually heard anything about the price of the A7s?
I'm a bit worried that it appears bigger and to the right of the A7r on this chart:

What do you mean?
about who gets to choose the crop?
some nikon cameras don't let you choose: you get FF if you use a lens designed for FF (or with no electronics), and APS-C if you plug a lens designed for APS-C
but forget it: from sony's wording, I think the user gets to choose this here
