Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

The A7s is aimed squarely at the 5D MK3 market so I expect it to cost closer to $3000, hopefully $2500 US street price.

Strange, 'cause the GH4 outclasses the 5D3 in video for 1700 anyway. Both these cameras aren't as nice over-all for stills however.

Not quite. GH4's low light performance still isn't as good as on the 5D3, and it's not full frame.

But who REALLY wants full-frame but a few die-hard folks (for video that is)? I like the dynamic range on this camera but can do without the full frame (I don't mind experimenting). Put bigger pixels on a Super 35mm sized sensor camera and you'll get s lot of takers...I think. Heck...if they made this multi-aspect where you could shoot full frame / Super 35 / M/43 at any given moment...then they'd win over everyone in every category....almost.

Where? On the paper? At what cost? Noise? Let alone the lower resolution... A picture is not only lowlight capabilities and it is a owl who writes ;) The point is if DOF was the old grail, now it is no light or the absence of grain but film required the art and craft of lighting and had lots of grain... If so in the latter case, let's praise the GH4 rather than the 5D3 versus the GH3, here:

If it's true about rolling shutter performance then that's a big negative. I did have my concerns when the promo videos showed little camera movement. Maybe a real video camera with this sensor would use a global shutter?

im not sure why the physical size would have any bearing on RS as EOSHD seams to imply?

Why are Sony being so cagey over the price, it's supposed to be shipping in less than a month?

Yeah. I'm seeing a bit more noise and far worse dynamic range.

The lighter the camera the more rolling shutter, nobody has hands steady enough to avoid it on a DSLR. Professionals use rigs, stabilisers, tripods etc to get film worthy shots from DSLRs. If you want to shoot handheld you need a camera with around 16ms read like a C100 or FS100. There's some camera movement in the shots on the boat but I don't know if that's handheld or stabilised, I suspect a shoulder rig or stabiliser was used.

Sony are testing the water to gauge interest before they set the price... smart.

I don't think you'll get sufficient low light performance without a rolling shutter at this price level. The sensor is still compromised for stills use, or else it'd be 8 MP, and it doesn't have half the processing power it'd need to compare to a real camcorder. I saw some RS jello in a GH4 demo the other day, not gonna get rid of it unless you spend 20k (or accept 400 ISO).

Factor in a speed booster for the GH4 and the bigger leeway for NR shooting @ 4K compared to the 5D's HD image and the low light advantage is gone.

I do have a FS100 and find the RS performance acceptable and would not use a camera with a worse RS skew. I do rig my camera and shoot on supports so I'm not a run n gun merchant, I was a professional Camera Operator.

The point about RS is not just shooting hand held it's also a question of shooting life and life has a habit of throwing fast moving subjects at the lens, it's 2014 overt jello-vision should be consigned to history and I don't want to see skews on anything other than whip pans and certainly I don't want to see skews on moving objects and vehicles unless they're formula 1 cars.

EOSHD comments to the size of the sensor as being cause of RS, not sure if I believe that. My understanding is that the boat shots were all shot in HD (correct me if I'm wrong) which uses the crop section so may show less skew than full sensor 4K. If Sony has gone backwards wrt to RS skew they won't be able to sell me this camera at any price.

The price the dealers have been told to work with is £2500 inc VAT in EU and ME regions that's a fact I have spoken to one directly myself. I think Sony were waiting for after NAB to set the price in stone save for surprises and unfortunately the A7s will be premium priced even if they take a hint that £2500 is too steep.

It's probably not the camera I was hoping it to be but that doesn't make it a bad camera or one that others will find great for their needs.
