Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

Remember that RED adds features through free firmware updates... I'm willing to bet that, down the line, well see a 120fps 2k update for the Scarlet.

Everybody wish that, but Jim mentioned well before that more fps cost way more more $$$$ and that's it. It looks like they tried hard to fit it in price range but they just didnt sucseeded. :(

yeah, in the next Epic firmware update (which is a 39.000$ camera) they will give an awesome feature called playback. Playback.

(just kiddin')

Must say a bit disappointed with the C300. 1080 and over cranking at 720 - for 20k? come on. It does look like a great image though, and obviously this is a "Canon" so it wont break when those critical tight deadlines come calling.

It wont replace our HPX502 thats for sure. Thats a 5 year old camera, that for corporate work really does most things the C300 does. Sure image quality is better on the C300, but its not worth the expense of the upgrade just yet.

I think Canon also got caught out by Scarlet, or they decided to keep something in reserve to pull out at the last minute if they needed it. So they photoshop'ed a "C" on a 1D X and said we have a prototype 4k! ..yeah right. Canon have "never" released a concept camera before - so somethings fishy. That said I bet they are thinking about pushing out that 4k camera soonish or moving the MK3 forward. They must realise that by saying they have a 4k dlsr in the wings it will hurt C300 sales.

Either way though Canon "are" officially in the film business which can only be a good thing for all of us.

Personally I'll wait for the next announcement.

@kylevant: I liked best the coverage from prolost and philip bloom: quick and to the point, with all the important stuff in

Why is it that the very thing that caused this revolution is now turning around and biting the very same people that made the revolution happen? the dslr's were for indi filmakers (the REAL ones). Now they have these cameras that are totally out of reach to the indi guy. And an even more mythical new dslr on the way...its not that hard Canon. No one is clamouring for 4k or RAW in a dslr .Reasonable upgrades for the 5d (7d) are:

1. real 1080p ...not some pseudo hd thing
2. 1080 60p
3. no aliasing or moire
4. higher bit rate and better codec
5. ability to record to external recorder.

Simple. Done. Keep that at a dslr price of the 5d and 7d and thats really good step. Is that so hard?!

that said all these cameras are looking awesome and its really a good thing for digital filmaking on a whole

100% agree, problem is I think they're gonna give none of those future (especially real HD) to protect their video cameras:(

Just because Jim says it's the same sensor, doesn't mean the performance is going to be exactly the same. CMOS sensors that are manufactured are different, as their are variations in the fabrication process. Like microprocessors, I have to imagine that RED bins (separates) them based on performance. The best and fastest going to the Epic, the slower but still fully functional at the speeds the Scarlet-X works, going to it. This is a no-brainer for them. They don't have to throw out sensors that aren't fast enough now and can sell them in a new camera.

I think the Scarlet-X has some great stats. I don't get the DR comment, they say it has the same DR as the Epic which I read at 14. The C300 from Canon is saying 12 stops. I just don't see anything about the C300 in what technical information we have that makes it better than the Scarlet, it seems inferior in almost all categories, including sound (16-bit versus 24-bit). Actually the two things the C300 has looks like ND filters and weight.

I think once the street price gets established on the C300 they will probably, minus lens but kitted out to be functional, will probably have the same price. DVInfo was pretty spot on with all the information they had, so I have to imagine those prices are what we are going to see.

I just think Canon dropped the ball on this one. I think a lot o people are going to pick the Scarlet over the C300. If the C300 was say $10k I might be able to get into that zone, but now I am considering the Scarlet instead.

Tough decisions :)

I cant believe the ef mount is a dumb mount... Im flaberghasted......

Disappointed in everyway.

In that Mobius short I saw a major artifact in the sand cloud. It was the 1080p version and I realise there's some compression going on but it still looked ott.

It was a large step in the gradient of the cloud. Reminiscent of 8bit images (even though this is 10bit).

Maybe it was the Vimeo compression.

Nice try Canon (sarcasm)

...Late to the party, didn't bring any beer (cause you drank it all), brought your dumb babbling girl friend who says "that's hot" all night long, while you try hitting on every one else's girl...

Go home. Get sober. Show up tomorrow and make some apologies. Plan a party of your own (another party as it were). And ~THIS TIME~ DO IT RIGHT!!!!!

Deposit coming for Scarlet. Wifey's on board. Thanks for doing it right Jim!

The EF mount is not dumb. You can control both iris and focus, even wirelessly with the optional Wi-Fi adapter. There's even a wheel on the camera to control the iris on EF lenses. However, the camera does not have AF or AE. If you're a professional filmmaker you wouldn't be using AF or AE anyway, correct?

Regarding auto features. True, but it is really nice to have the option to click a switch and get the camera to get you there or in the ballpark when you're in a rush especially when the lenses have the ability to do it. You then click back to manual. Why waste features that are built in.

I'm thinking this camera was rushed a bit to get it out the door quick. I also think that if it were 10bit people wouldn't disregard the camera.

I agree "push" auto features can be useful. I personally wish Canon would do more research in contrast detect AF and come up with more automated ways for us to pull focus. A very fast push auto AF system would be very useful, but Canon's contrast detect AF is too primitive right now. The only way they've gotten very accurate and fast AF is in their broadcast box lenses, but that has a prism and uses a TTL-Secondary Image Registration Phase-detection system.

Canon fully admits that they developed this camera as quickly as possible. I wouldn't say "rushed" becaused that implies the product is buggy and not completely done. What they did was make conscious design decisions to leave out certain things and reuse certain things in order to meet a deadline. They said they reused the Digic DV III processor from the XF305 in order to expedite development (which makes sense), but that came with inherent limitations such as no 30p in fullHD and 8 bit codec.

I have been thinking about the C300. So Canon put some video in the 5d mark2 as an afterthought, just for some news gathering and it is resounding success. For what it was, a photo camera that shoot video, it gave access to the large sensor cinema look to everyone. Now they have 3 years, decide and plan some dedicated video camera for this market they have created and they deliver a 8 bit 50 mbit, 60fps in 720p only, for an astounding $ 20 000. Apart from its sensor this camera has more or less the same processing than its XF line starting at $ 3 500.

Now I do understand that it was effectively an accident the Canon 5D mark 2, because if they had anticipated it video success they would have sold it at a much higher price.
