Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

And it could still be a photocopier .

No, I don't really think so, just stiring the pot a little.

Double, double, toil and trouble
Fire burn and cauldron bubble

Sorry, been watching the Scotish Play on DVD

Isn't it Double bubble, toil and trouble ?..........no. I'm never right on these fairy tales quotes.....I was only 7 or 8 at the time!

PS Yes, I bet Barry

I can tell you it definitely has a LOG gamma option. It's a picture profile.

it does have SDI.

It doesn't record 4:2:2 onboard. Still 8 bit 4:2:0.
It does have a 15mm rod support.
it is "modular"
it does not at this time record or output 4K.
And you know this how?

What are the terms of the bet?:2vrolijk_08:
I said Canon wouldn't deliver a true competitor (feature-wise and price-wise) to the AF100/FS100 before January 1st, 2012. Some folks seem to think that they will, I still say they won't. And I don't think a $12,000 body counts as a competitor.

But, anyway, the point of the bet was -- if I'm right, then anyone who bets against me has to send Isara $20. And if I'm wrong, then I'll have to send $20 to Isara for everyone who takes the bet. I opened it up to a maximum of 50 bettors so I'd be on the hook for a max of $1,000. THen, somewhere along the way I smarted off about something to the tune of $500, so I'm probably on the hook for that too.

That's dumb then. People are just going to keep using DSLRs. Lack of a good 4:2:2 on-board codec is what kept me from buying a AF-100 and FS100.

The price should be no more than a T2i then... 4:2:0 8-bit? ...$800 tops. No matter how many "features" it has and how "pro" it looks.

I think it was 20 bucks... me not a betting man... I go to Vegas and play roulette... that way I have a 50/50 chance of winning...

Yes, friendly bet with Barry for $20 :) - S35 or larger sensor video / cinema camera. NOT 2/3" hairdryer.

Tell you what - I'll give you better than 50/50 odds. Heck, if it's a 2/3" hairdryer, I'll give you $40 and if it's a S35 or larger sensor camera, you can just give me $10 :)

I will add that I guess the following is very likely:
- PL mount as well as electronically controlled EOS mount options (remember that old brochure pic of an XL1 surrounded by EF lenses? I'm sure they want to repeat it)
- Connected to that Ron Howard competition thing (just seems to make sense - maybe he announces filming it on the new cam?)
- Two levels of camera (pure speculation on my part but the amount of times this has popped up from different sources, PLUS Canon's historic announcements of pairs of cameras makes it seem likely)

I should add that the rumors are going in circles now... the latest one is based on an old fxguide.com podcast (they're great but were just chatting in a jolly speculative, rumor-gathering manner) and is somehow being reprinted now as new news?

I think you need to determine what the price point is to compete with the AF/FS 100. I'd say within $1k in either direction :) If that's the case, then what the hell, I'll take the bet! :) It's all for a good cause anyways.

Project Imagin8ion.
Ron Howard.
Los Angeles Area.

Is that the production? I thought that was 1DX not the new canon?

Hmmm!
All the other info that has been leaked is sort of true - except the 4k part - I mean, yeah - the sensor sees higher than 1080p, but it downscales live, no way of recording 4k as of now.

I said it was a true 4K sensor, not that it recorded 4K...

But I also did hear that it'll be an option really soon.

Substantiate or no?

I honestly don't believe this for a second. For Canon to not include the 4:2:2 (broadcast approved) codec that's currently standard on their XF300 cameras just doesn't make sense.

Don't believe it. Just wait until Thursday. Lots of questionable people coming out of the woodwork claiming they know stuff or have seen it. Some of it is intentional misinformation.

Unless theres more than one camera announced and this one is their af100/fs100 competitor that can use canon lenses. Lenses which everyone has been dying to use on those other cams and might be the reason the Birger is a no show.

Oh, that's much more fun that the bet. Hmmm, let's see....I have seen it!!!! I cannot name my sources, but I work in Los Angeles and have seen them shooting Project Imagin8tion with it (or maybe something else).

Let's see, it's about yay long. It actually is 1 pixel. A mirror moves 2 million times a second and focuses a beam of light onto that one pixel, resulting in a 2K picture.

It is 4:4:4 but only 6 bit. Or maybe I read the side of the camera wrong. Can't be too sure...

It records up to 120 fps but only in increments of 15.

It is somewhere under $15,000 but that doesn't include a camera.

A 10-15k EF mount, 1080p camera with 8 bit 4:2:0 sounds completely underwhelming (to put it politely).

Better have crazy DR...

There could be two cameras remember.

If the around $5000 EF mount camera is 8 bit 4:2:0 it would be underwhelming but consider that it's going up against the af100 and fs100 but of which record 4:2:0 with their codecs.

I would have to fully agree with the logic that you used here.

.

Same here, to give a log base output but with only 4.2.0 an 8 bit is insane. Color correcting it would induce a lot of banding etc. So I guess it is just misinformation. Someone just in need of attention, should have been a little more intelligent by not stating so much contradicting spec to make the thing a bit more realistic.

I hope they come with 2 camera, using the sensor and base image quality as a reference. The higher end model that has been discussed for about $ 10 000 + and lower end model at around $ 5000/7000. The high-end model could get all the goodies like 444, future 4k output, hd-sdi, 12 bit etc. and a base model with only 2k output and 10 bit 4.2.2, hdmi but with the same DR. It would be a true upgrade path for all their dslr users that are more into video.
