Rumor: Canon 4k super35 camera

I had no time for 49 pages reading whatsoever, so no idea if this was already reported in early posts. However, I had information from inside it is a 4:2:2 1080p camera. As far as I could understand it is a S35 sensor size in a camcorder form factor in order to compete with the actual Sony and Panasonic offers. RED is of or from another stratosphere, even though had began all this with the RED ONE.

If this is true, this development will be of great interest. Do you consider your source to be a reliable person? I hope that you are right about this.

if so I'm in. been stacking my coins for a time such as this. Please canon don't let us down. Oh and 4:2:2 in an 8 bit wrapper wont cut it.

Kind of shocked that the announcement is this close and there have been no major leaks from Canon or RED re: specs or price.

Well, Red makes sense not to have leaks. Red is a pretty small company and the brain trust is even smaller. Since I don't believe for a minute that Red is actually building Scarlets at the moment, there probably aren't more than 20-25 people who actually know what is being announced on the 3rd.

Canon on the other hand is strange. It actually worries me about the possibility that no camera is actually going to be announced and this is something related less to hardware and more to service OR that it will be an announcement of an intention to build cinema cameras, not an actual camera that will be soon to ship.

I'm on a feature right now w/ F3 log, and a ki pro.

the dynamic range is so high, I have so much freedom its crazy. It never blows out, and its noise is so low, and so sensitive that I'm shooting whole scenes with 200 and 400w hmi's, while having sunlight comng in through windows. Honestly, I'm hitting the wall with what I can do with the lights, waaaaay before the camera fails. Its like being able to get any shot you want whenever you want, with the simplest of of lightng packages.

We have:
2k tungsten blonde
1k tungsten par
1k tungsten openface
2x 650's
2x 300's

1.2k hmi
400w hmi
200w hmi

That's it.

Day interiors, night interiors, day exteriors, night exteriors...... I can do it all with just those lights.

I was this close to get an F3, but bailed out, mainly due to the bad service and support I was getting from Sony HK. The F3 is a beast of a camera, no doubt, specially with the SLOG. With the SLOG upgrade the F3 skin tones look much better than without it. I don't particularly like the "sony" standard look, but the SLOG neutral look gives much more creative freedom for grading.

What you describe, Timur, is the dream of any guerrilla independent filmmaker. I've gone past my initial deadline and decided to wait. I think it will truly be interesting what Canon and Red do. Canon has that partnership with Technicolor. I think we'll see an evolved form of the "Cinestyle" profile that will give similar results to the F3's SLOG. Now the Scarlet, on another hand, is completely unpredictable...

It's kind of unusual for a company to start shipping cameras immediately after announcing them. Sony and Panasonic usually start shipping weeks or months after announcing. Canon may not start shipping until well into 2012. If they're smart, they'll allow for some changes after the announcement -- you know, to counter some of what Red announces.

Soon is relative. I mean an announcement like the 1DX. Camera design done, shipping in 2012. With no seemingly legitimate leaks this close, makes it seem like there isn't going to be an actual camera announcement.

For the record, I heard the same thing about a month ago from a camera sales rep that will not be named. The S35 sensor was also reported to be a true 4K sensor, and it was already on a feature film shooting, some of the footage "to be shown" at the event.

Also heard a price tag of about 10~12K starters.

I don't know how much I buy into it, but at least that's the general consensus around here.

Please do not hold me to this, I haven't posted because I know it could just be here-say.

Leaking details of an announcement kind of defeats the purpose of having an announcement, doesn't it?

The only leak I know of now is what Jannard just posted, about how Scarlet is now a professional camera and the price has gone up. My interpretation of that is that it is now a 4K unit instead of 3K; all the rest remains to be seen in just a few short days.

Jannard just said it's not going to be 4K S35 because that's what EPIC is.

He didn't say it wasn't going to be 2/3". I've always thought it was going to be 2/3", but after his insistence that 4K is the only format a pro should be shooting, and this new insistence that the Scarlet is professional, I think it's reasonable to guess that he's saying the 2/3" Scarlet now shoots 4K in addition to 3K.

A website posted this earlier today regarding what may be announced:

"New Canon camera will have the following:

@Price: sub $15,000 - possible down to $10,000
@Image quality: Alexa good
@SDI outs
@XLRs (audio)
@Piviting & detachable monitors and grips
@PL mount and EF mount options
@Resolution - 4k capture, 2k recording"

What does the term "Alexa good" refer to regarding image quality??

Probably won't be 4K. From an engineering standpoint, I can't see them making a sensor change this late, then tweaking all the image processing again. Also, the last cryptic message from Jannard was "I'm betting that 3 of a kind beats 2 pair. :-)" So sounds like 3K Scarlet vs 2K (1080P Canon or whatever). I bet they added a new warranty on Scarlet, ruggedized it more, or something like that to define it as professional. Usually in product design, a professional product is differentiated on specs, reliability and build quality.

It's disappointing that Jannard continues to make false and exaggerated statements in classic backhanded compliment form:

Jannard said:
Canon is a great company and I'm quite sure that whatever they offer will be a terrific buy. And as soon as you buy, they will offer another one in 6 months that you will want to buy again... and again.

One look at history shows Canon hasn't updated the 5DMkII in over 3 years! It took 4 years to update the 1Ds and merge it into the 1D-X. And how often does Canon put out new professional video cameras? Like almost never.

that is not what Jannard said. He was responding to this post:
"If its 4K 72fps for 10K then you'll see more than crossover. you'll see cross owners. esp as scarlet will have HDRX? Unless you 'forget everything we've said for the last 3 years' that package would be a little too close to what people are putting $40k down for today and have been in a queue for for months no?"

"Sounds like EPIC... lower your expectations. Really. Not close. This is what bugs me. And you get something like this from where?"

Jim

"Alexa good" should be, IMO, related to dynamic range, color rendition, low light performance, detail in the image. The Alexa is the current benchmark in the 1080p world.

Alexa is the current benchmark in the digital world. Alexa reads 3.2K and EPIC 4K (if you shoot 5K), but Alexa has more quality in its pixels.
