RPO's 'Why We Need Light' Article Series.

Just watched Cinematographers style again for the millionth time and plan to read both books again. I love it.

Thank you for taking the time to make a valuable contribution to this community.... I think you deserve a few perks... like a larger pm quota, etc...

I just got misty-eyed while skimming through all of the grabs posted. Wtf is wrong with me? Anybody else experience this?

(now I'm actually reading the article)

Thanks guys!

And thank you Jason for giving me a bit more upload space to accommodate the overflow my account has sustained from all of these examples which apparently cause Drew Ott to cry. :)

I am excited to get the others up, although I've not had the time. Been busy working and will be on set for another 12 days or so. Until then, enjoy what it up!

I’m much more of a reader than a writer on these kind of forums but I just wanted to say: Thank you! Great work, very clearly written and the best part is that you’ve found great example to illustrate the text.
I haven’t got any work done today since all I’ve done is reading your articles ;-)

Thanks for the free study, Ryan.

Some free copyediting...

There are a number of "its'" with an added apostrophe. Not needed.

Similarly there are various versions of viewers, viewers' and viewer's. I think they all should have been the last one.

And I even caught an errant Nosterafu in there. This could be the newest Shao Lin Death Technique, though. But that would be a different article.

I will look into it, thanks! This reminds me I need to post the last part of the series. Once I'm off the show I'm working on now, I'll find the time.

What do you mean by the last comment? I don't follow.

Ryan,

I just wanted to thank you for the time and effort you put into creating this wonderful reference. I have not had such an eye opening experience as a "student" (4th year at UNI, but I will always consider myself a student) Cinematographer since I learned what it really meant to truly shape light, as I had when I read this article series. What you have so far is an in depth look at things that I've never quite grasped consciously, but have (to a small extent), performed (that "this just feels right" feeling all of us artists have) when I have been a cinematographer on films. I have a short film coming up in the early spring that I will (and have already started) thinking like a true Cinematographer, not just one who does things because they look cool (not what I always do, but I have fallen prey to it a few times).

Cheers (from the cold Chicago)!
Peter Mosiman

Next time I'm in LA (I'll be moving there sometime next year), I'd like to buy you a beer to thank you for the inspiration. Can't wait for the rest of the series!

Very, very good!!! It changed my perspectives.
There are too many things I'd not ever thought by myself.
Very enlightening!!!
