roxsen battery grip?

i'm about to get a battery grip for my d90, mainly to have more shooting time plus the aa backup option, but when i found this i got intrigued by the timelapse capabilities and so on. anyone used it before? what kind of timing functions does it provide? it's half price of the nikon grip yet with more functionality and batteries included, so i guess the build quality isn't great, but is it ok? anyone?

I also have been looking at something like that... i really want to do time lapse with the D90... anyone have experience with this thing?

Interesting find. If you end up getting this, let me know how it works, I may just have to switch out my MB-D80 grip for this one!

i think similar d90 grips (not mde by nikon) can be found for around $49 for this thing... i looked into it for some time online but didnt follow through as I havent faced the need for it yet...

The price is not the issue, it's the timelapse function. Thanks for your replies, i'll tell you how it works if i decide to get it.

Mattsand,
I have a batterygrip bought from Roxsen at home right now for the D80/D90. The brand is Phottix (same as the one You have looked at I suppose) but this is the version with built-in-batteries. But I suppose the quality is pretty much the same as the time-lapse-version.
And the version I have has good quality, feels the same as the Nikon MB-D80 (which I use on the D90), so no problem there.

As for the time-lapse-function I have Phottix wired remote control (for D80) with the same function. And I think it works pretty much the same as the one on the batterygrip. Here You can see a little video where Linkdelight demonstrates the same remote but for D90 (brand is Aputure but looks and works the exact same as the Phottix, proberbly just a different name):

does the roxen grip presented by matt come with a rubber coating ?
just like the mbd80 one has ?
does anybody know ?
I have heard that the built quality of the second brand models is often very questionable.

Matt, when are you getting yours ? :)

thanks.

The non-lcd-grip that I got has rubber coating as the same way as the MB-D80 has. So if they havent changed that to the lcd-version: it has.

But I suppose its better to wait until Mattsand gets his grip.

they said they'll ship in 24 hours, then it's anywhere between 2 days and 2 weeks from hong kong in my experience. yeah, i imagine it won't have quite the same feel, but as long as it fits snugly and firmly i'm good.

look at the pictures, the front bottom part looks like rubber, that's the part that becomes the grip when you hold it vertically so i guess that's what you mean? i haven't used the nikon one so i can't comment on that.

Just checked the video out.... Looks like this is perfect for timelapse, the only reason i would buy the grip is for the timelapse so this might be better... good find

yeah, but the remotes are old news. the grip is what's new and what i wanted this thread to be about. i think it adds functionality to the camera itself, i mean you always have it on for all the other reasons, rather than just being another accessory you can leave at home. ;-)

ok, verdict: it's rather low quality with cheap plastic and flimsy buttons that don't give any distinct feedback, you need to look at the screen to know if you've pressed them. still it feels sturdy mounted and it works as advertised, and it has a rubber grip. my only concern right now is that it only shoots up to 99 pictures in timelapse mode. you can restart it but that means the framing will probably change and depending on the subject it can cause a jerk in the movement when there's a time gap. all in all i think it's a great deal for the money but not more than that.

thanks Matt,
could you post some pix of the unit ?
I know there some on ebay or whatever but I know for a fact that they use the nikon grip for close ups and often slap their name on it.
I 'd rather see your pix than some advertising crap from ebay.

thanks.

Thanks for the update.

Thanks for the update.

This grip has some nice features. I ordered my Nikon grip last week after searching for after market grips. The features on the grip you purchased are pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

don't do business with roxsen. i never got the aa battery holder for the grip, but i didn't worry since i thought they're just send it after i pointed it out. however i've since sent them three emails, one ebay message, and opened a complaint with paypal, and no response. worst thing is that in the middle of it all they emailed me thanking me for the business and asking me to post feedback on ebay. idiots. the aa battery holder was one of my main reasons for going with a grip rather than just a remote. everyone can make a mistake, but not responding to dissatisfied customers is close to the stupidest thing you can do, especially with me. i'm sure i've managed to take thousands of dollars worth of business away from kahl film in germany before (google it, i never miss an opportunity), now it's roxsen's turn. ;-)
