RoweCine Dolly kits now for sale!

this thing looks like an incredibly valuable addition to any set.

another seemingly stupid question:
is the board above the wheels included in the package? is it already put together or do i have to myself? if i do have to put it together myself, are there any power tools involved? i dont have access to any power tools so i hope not.

thanks

in reply to the last couple questions..

the wheel sets are very quiet.. as quiet as wheels can be rolling on PVC track.

the platform is not included in the wheel package. you can build your own platform out of whatever you wantin whatever size you want. most people use plywood, and paint it. we recommend using a 4' by 28" sheet of at least 1" thick ply if your purchasing the 4' rails, if your using the 1' corner sections. you might want to go thicker pending how much weight will be on it.

...youll need one power drill or hand drill with a 5/16" bit for assembling the dolly. it is used for drilling the holes through the platform to mount the cine dolly wheel trucks. if you have a hand drill it would work, but i would just borrow a drill. the only other tools required is two ratchets with 1/2" or 13mm sockets or two 1/2" or 13mm wrenches. and a hammer. youll also need a pencil or pen, and a 4' straight edge.. like the edge of a door if you cant find anything else.. lol. should take about 10 minutes to 1/2 hour to complete pending your skill. most people report it being under 1/2 hour though. it comes with complete instructions with diagrams, and should be pretty easy.

..depends on what size kit you order really. if you have the 4 1' corners, you can fit then in about a 1' long x 7 inces high x 7 inches wide box... or a 2' long 6" high 6" wide box is nice. if you have the two 4 ' rail kit they fit nicely in a 4' x 6" x6" box.. which is what we ship them in. about the size of a slightly taller lightstand or tripod case.

OK, due to a a couple requests i am currently looking into other colors of wheels.

aside from black.. which will hopefully be available soon.
is there any other serious suggestions for wheel color.

Wheels only?

Wheels only?

Is it possible to buy only the wheels? I have dolly very similiar to what you have shown, but it needs new wheels... Thanks.

..actually im looking into this right now. Im trying to work out a custom wheel (perfect for dollies of course) to be manufactured just for Rowe Cine. and then I could also make the wheels availabe seperatley. No word yet at this time. I have someone else working on it, but I'll follow up today and see if I cant get things moving. I'll let you know as soon as i can about the current endeavor. if it not available through that ill certainly look elsewhere though.

...im working on a full demo, but im not in a real hurry. however its funny you should ask, I was busy editing and decided to just throw this together tonight to put something out there until i get the polished demo up.. which i have no idea when that will be.. im very very ... very busy right now.. anyhow.. lets not critique the color correction or any of that other stuff for now.. some of this i barely had time to light, ...and some I didnt at all. but in the end it will all be styled and polished. graphics and such. the usual .. anyway, its not everyday you get to privately block off large sections of a huge government owned building like the capitol of your state, and we had to work very very fast.. we were there from before open to close, and got ushered out with 2 minutes left to shoot.. had to go back another day just do do an audio pickup in the same ambient room.. bah.. anyway these shots are from a couple corporate/non-profit type vids im working on right now.. since its not suppose to be, its not very cinematic in useage of the dolly or shooting form, but the dolly motion in general is readily aparent. of course.. its all shot off a set of Rowe Cine cine dolly wheels. 6 wheels per corner. 30 feet of JMP thick walled 1" PVC track used in 2 shots over 2 track connections using the screw in track connectors that come with the cine dolly wheels. shot on DVX100 in 24PN and edited and exported at 24p for this web preview. i took the audio out because although i have rights to use the footage promotionally, id rather not blab about who im working for right now. nuf said .. heres the link..

Thanks for providing the video. It really helped me to see that smooth shots can be acieved with the dolly wheels. I'm on my way to order now!

Cool product, Neil. Congratulations on producing it. I guess the spacing of the wheel assemblies would have to be considered if you needed to allow enough walking room between the "rails" for your subject, right? Would this be completely determined by the width of the camera platform? Looks like a great product, though. Would there be a way to motorize this platform as I've been wanting to make some timelapse shots where the camera tracks during the entire sequence?

..since alot of peopl wonder about whether theyll be able to build a dolly with this kit well.. heres some info on the construction.

..its really easy to do.. total assembly takes APX 10- 30 minutes from when you get the box to being done. instructions are really easy .. my wife figured it out first time with no problems. at any rate, i think the biggest issue people run into is cutting the platform for the dolly..they may not have a saw or such. and heres my advice.. have the store do it for you.. when you buy lumber or such they will cut it free of charge at most stores.. just tell themn the size you need and tell then it has to be a measured and very striaght cut.. then just take it home at the right size. all that you have to do from there is put the trucks on the bottom in the proper position, and make a little mark through the mounting holes.. and then drill the holes through the platform on your marks, and bolt the trucks on.. super easy.

i of course would paint it and make it all cool looking first with aluminum diamond plate foot steps and such, but thats up to whoever. anyway you can buy with confidence that you can build it easily. ..just FYI

What type of wood do you recomend? Our dolly is made of oak as not to bend while my 225 - plus pound self is on it. This was expensive, however, and probably overkill. We are looking into build a smaller dolly.... Thanks,
John Vincent

..most people use plywood. I suggest using at least a 1" thick peice of quality plywood in combination with the 4' rails. the full length rails help add support. but this also depends on how many wheels you have underneath, and how much heavy equipment youll have on top aside from one rider.. the more wheels underneath, the smaller the space between front wheel groups and back wheel groups.. so the platform doesnt have as much chance to bend at all. but the more weight on top.. the more support youll want. the mounting bolts supplied with the kit are made for a 1" thick board. but you could replace them with longer bolts to allow as thick of a platform as you want. I couldnt see needing anything over 1 1/2" unless your packing alot of people and/or gear on top near the middle of the platform. Id like to switch to offering whatever length bolts the purchaser will need pending their intended setup. ..most people however are fine with a 1" platform. generally the tripod goes in the middle, and the riders ride towards the edges over the rails and wheels, so the amout of strain on the center of the platform is fairly reduced.

Thanks man! Appreciate the help... Just one more question - assuming weight is not an issue, which type of pipe would offer the smoothest ride, pvc or actual steel. We use black pvc, which is definately smoother than the white, but I would use something else (even if heavier, ect.) if it offered a smoother shot.
John

they are bopth equally as smooth as long as you keep them clean and free of debris. id say the black thick walled pvc or white thick wlled ar ethe best for cost and weight and all .
