roundtripping with soundtrack pro problem

hello.
i am trying to figure out soundtrack pro workflow... and hope somone can help me with this annoying problem..

so, i send a fcp multitrack project to stp. do the change in stp and then export it back to fcp using export and then send files to fcp sequence in the after export-options.

so far so good, but the problem arises when i relize want to do some changes to the video again. and all my audio tracks are nested in one final track. then i am not able to control sync problems with individual tracks and so on. this is a really lame thing i think, or have i missed something?

i know my audiotracks are under the active nested audiotrack, but they dont have my stp effects. i dont understand whats the reason for the nesting.

hope someone understand the problem

Not nested. It's a mixed, stereo file.

But this is why audio post is never done until picture is locked - meaning, no audio post work takes place until the video editing is done, done, and done. It's the last stop on the voyage in the post house, before layback to tape or print to film.

I haven't used it yet, but isn't this exactly the situation the Conform tool in Soundtrack Pro is designed to deal with?

hello.
i think you actually could use the conform solution yes. but still it will be very inconvinient since you then have to go back to the original clip that havent been edited in stp. make your changes and then conform. thats a really bad way to do it i think, so there must be a better way...
and i know the audio editing is best left to the end prosess, but even so it is most likely that you have to do some visual changes too in the end that you first realize when working with the audio...

I disagree. There's a reason they call it "picture locked." You have to scrutinize your project many times through and be absolutely sure that you're ready for audio post before you move on. Any decision to make even the slightest change to picture after audio post has started can reset the whole process. That costs time and (usually) money.

Of course, working in reels means that a minor change will only reset the workflow for a 15-ish minute project, but that's still a pretty ineffective way to work. And if ANYthing is changed after picture is supposedly locked, it should be something that does not affect the audio mix at all (spelling correction for gfx, color correction, etc.).

hmm. i am sad to hear this. well, i guess i have to be really sure about the picture before moving on then... just wish there was a way to roundtrip several times...

In a way, there is. FCP will allow you to mix levels, pan, even add plug-ins and filters. Just don't do anything that would be destructive editing. You can get a pretty good idea of where your audio stands that way. Then, when you're ready, clear all your audio filters and then send it off to STP.
