Which Ziess would be your 2nd choice following a 50mm F1.4?

I shoot video with a hacked GH2 and I have a partner who shoots with a GH4. I have rented Ziess Kits (ZF series on adapters) and love the look.

I just picked up a 50mm F1.4 and want to begin rounding out a kit with my next grab being a wider lens. I tend to go for faster lenses and the widest F2 is a 25mm. That would be my first choice but I thought I would bounce it off of you guys here as if it weren't for the higher f numbers, I'd grab something wider.

My shooting is a mixtures of portrait styles with LED lights (plenty) and run and gun style for B-roll... a LOT of B-roll. This is because we do a lot of voiceover style videos.

What do you guys think? Should I move on the 25mm F2 or grab something wider and why would you if in my shoes? Thanks!

I would get the 15mm F2.8 lens. Those are always nice for landscapes and anything else requiring a wide lens. 50mm is a fairly compressed shot on a GH2 or 4, so having that contrast between 50 and 15 will be nice to have.

Move to the zeiss contax c/y range of primes - you'll get just as good results for a fraction of the price, imho.

25mm without a doubt. It will essentially give you the field of view of your 50mm on a full frame sensor. Your not going to get the same shallow dof as you would on a bigger sensor due to the speed, but it will be plenty shallow if set up properly. my 2cents

I have 50mm F1.4 the amazing 25mm F2 which has been perfect combo for me. So sharp. I'd love the Zeiss 15mm but its an expensive beast so went for a 14mm Samyang to cover wide requirements.

My kit for what it's worth (using on the EF - M43 Speed Booster) :

Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 II
Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8
Zeiss 25mm f/2
Zeiss 35mm f/2
Zeiss 50mm f/1.4
Zeiss 85mm f/1.4

All have Redrock Gears mounted on them for use with follow focus.

Whilst the argument can be made that the 25mm and 35mm Zeiss lenses are redundant due to the Sigma, I do find the look of the Zeiss lenses superior for character, and the feel of the hard stops and long focal throw, compared to the Sigma. Still, if Sigma were to put their new A series glass into some cinevised housings at a reasonable price with hard stops and long focal throws, I'd definitely be tempted....

Here's a guide to the real world lens relationships I put together using my own Zeiss ZE lenses on the Epic at 6K full frame (I have since sold the Zeiss 18mm f/3.5 and replaced it with the Sigma). The Zeiss lenses have fantastically low distortion and line up almost perfectly in field of view overlay. Only the depth of field and very slight vignetting hints that the lenses have changed in some areas! All are shot wide open.

I just had an acquaintance remind me of the voigtlander lenses. Any favorable thoughts towards the 17mm f.95 in a partnership with the Ziess 50?

Voight's m43 lenses are very nice, but dreamy-soft wide-open. Like your Zeiss they are built by Cossina so should have similar color reproduction.

I'd recommend the 25mm 2.0 as the next purchase too. I own one and find it wide enough on mft for most uses (especially with a speedbooster). I built a set which includes the 50mm, 35mm and 85mm and had them cine-modded. I used to own the 25mm 2.8 but sold it on. I couldn't recommend it having tried the 2.0.

Thanks everyone. I pulled the trigger on a used 25mm F2 from BH. I think that with these two, the 50 and the 25, I can move into other pieces like the short Zoits and a quality short zoom.

Many thanks.
