FS7: Round-Tripping & Loss of Detail

I *think* one of the things everyone keeps getting distracted by is the debate between whether or not the FS7 requires post-sharpening. While that is a valid discussion, my original post was that there is a visible degradation of detail /sharpness / clarity / whatever you want to call it when comparing the graded footage exported from Resolve to the “master” export from FCPX (again, with no adjustments only trimming and swapping a few shots around). This is even when using native resolution and the issue is exacerbated when scaling 4K to 1080.

I find that hard to believe, some adjustments must have been made in FCPX to make a visible difference. When you say trimming, you mean trimming on the timeline and not trimming the footage and resizing the footage afterwards right? A small resize will affect the image quality because of the resampling factor being very small. For instance resampling 4k to UHD instead of simply trimming the width without resizing will negatively affect image quality.

Could you share an example by dropboxing an original frame or an extract in tiff format from both sources with exactly the same resolution to demonstrate what you are seeing?

Yes Cary, you are correct; just trimming the duration NOT any of the dimensions or scaling.

I’m not at my system right now but I will try to upload a couple frames I can share that show what I am seeing.

No lens can make up for the layout of the sensor and oplf which "misses and blurs" large chunks of information that needs to be interpolated into a form that makes an image that is believed by the viewer.

I dont do any post work.. but its been almost a complaint from f5/55 owners from the start, that even with detail/aperture etc set to off.. the camera is still actually doing some sharpening...and much muttering of Sony not getting it... and with any sort of decent lens.. the image is just too sharp.. people have been dialing in negative settings in custom.. and so shooting Slog cine EI without those controls being available isnt a problem.. of course its all subjective.. does super sharp mean more believable to an audience .. I dont know.. I would have thought the Fs7 processing cant be much different or most likely no different at all from an f5.. ?
