maybe it was presumptuous of me to grade your footage. and i did come across as kind of a jerk in my first post, but i stand by what i said.. the skin tones in your clip are way to red or pink (the old guy with glasses and the bald guy look like they're severely sunburnt)... looking back at mine, i made them way too yellow but i was just trying to demonstrate a completely different look, maybe not one suitable for the context but i like it.
i forgot to say what i liked... i thought the lighting and the cinematography were very cool. it would have been hell to light it with all those mirrors and camera angles.
I liked your lighting Aram. well done. Looks like it was a fun shoot with theses characters.
I wasn't feeling the bald characters reaction shots. his close up felt awkward to me and then his "I understand frankie" comment off screen was a missed opportunity to convey his state of mind. I don't know what you have for coverage on him, but thats where I would tweak.
I didn't think it came off like being a jerk, I was just looking at what you did and the blacks blend right into each other. Like his shirt goes right into the background with no separation. I have a few back lights up to combat that problem. Also they all have really dark tans so they will look reddish. The old guys face was a lot tanner than his body also. I don't know if it was make up or natural. What you see in the shots is what it looked like there. No color grading yet at all.
All the places we went to were friends of the film makers. The clothing shop, the check cashing place, the italian restaurant, the houses. We did steal some shots under the willis ave bridge and even shot a loud blank gun under there and no cops came but it was cool because all these pigeons took off right through the frame.
The budget was about 100K and yes a feature all shot with a 5 man crew. I was at a wedding last night with the film makers and we were laughing that its going to be funny when the credits roll for about a second.
There were a few name actors in it, me, the camera package, there is still sound sweetening to be done and scoring, sound track, packaging, editing. So its not all spent yet.
The guy who wrote the script new them from being an actor and the director knew some of them also. I don't know how much they spent on them but they were all hanging out like it was a big bunch of friends making a movie. With a name like yours you probably would have fit right in also.
Did you see the bloopers? this is how the shoot when most of the time.
