I shot a video for a rapper in DC, Incwell. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. There are a few more things i am going to change but i wanted to show you guys the rough cut of it. Its in WMV format (yah yah i know... the final version will be in a better format). Anyway id love to hear thoughts and opinions on it, so check it out. 18 megs:

not bad man. i do have a few things though.

since the rapper has darker toned skin, you have to apply better lighting to his face so we can see it. when he was on the roof top all i could see was his teeth. that's no good.

also, i don't know if some of your shots you were going for this, but it seems that the camera was canted, were you going for that? it was annoying.

i think it was a good ROUGH cut, but i think with this type of music, there needs to be more cuts, and probably better locations. it did seem a little amateur, but i support your attempt.

Hey DoubleIt!
I liked your locations (especially outside the theatre, and by the escalator).
I think you cut it pretty well. Although, as Justin Kirch said, you do need a bit
more light in certain places. Keep it up!

Hmmm, well (normally) not my first choice of music -- but I liked this one a lot. Recognized most of your locations...lived there '94-96. Looked like there might have been occasional focus issues (when they were sitting on the stairs near the beginning), but night shoots are always a little tough. The camera being canted didn't bother me--I think it belonged there (and that you meant to do that). I realize your performers probably choose their own wardrobe but sometimes loosing the white shirt will help contrast issues (unless you want to use it as a bounce card <g>.). Nice work, I look forward to your next one.

let me correct myself on this canted angle thing. if you meant to do it, then it's cool, but i found it annoying because if you are going to have a canted angle, than make it CANTED. the canted angle that you showed just looked like the camera was off kilter. like you didn't set the tripod up correctly.

if you are going to tilt the camera, tilt the **** out of it.

Good stuff. Your locations are great. I really enjoyed watching it and the song was great. I agree that you need to have more cuts. Go over to a website with music videos and pick a song with a similar tempo and style. Watch it, and count how many shots last five seconds or more. I'll give you a hint--there won't be any. I went and checked a couple out just for myself, and most of the shots are 2 seconds or less. Our MTV generation is just used to seeing so many cuts--short attention spans! Try to put those quick cuts in rhythm to the music, and change it up to keep it fresh.

Your shots and locations are great! The song was good--does he have a label? I would buy that CD (and I'm not even a huge rap fan).

Hope this helps.

I think it's okay if you don't want to have lots of short cuts. Why do what everyone else is doing? I liked it, but mainly the long shots of the theatre and the liquor store. They seem to evoke particular feelings for me, reminding me of home (I live in the UK now). I liked the music and thought the backing vocals were a nice touch.

Thanks for the comments so far guys, keep 'em coming! I am conflicted on the cuts as of now. I know they are too long and they are more film like than music video. I think im going to try and re cut it so the cuts are 2-4 instead of 3-5 and that will hopefully help.

The entire thing was shot handheld and those dutch angles are intentional. Some of it is too dark, i need to stop letting htat damn LCD trick me into thinking the light is good.

Wish I could check video out, quicktimes not letting me pull it up.

Right now its just in WMV format so you need windows media player to view it, but the final cut will be in a more universal format

I like your locations, the lighting could have used some work. I don't think you have to cut just for the sake of cutting. Who cares what MTV is doing.

I liked it. All the scene locations really adds more production value to the video.

I'm shooting a music video for a rapper here in Hawaii next month. Hope mine turns out just as well.

So any sugestions for things to change? Im chaning the title sequence, i dont like that, and there are a few shots i dont like, but beyond that? I know the lightings a bit off, but i used on handheld 650k and a flex fill, that was it.
