rough cut of open

Hello,
Alright, this is the rough cut for the open for a documentary I shot out in New York.

http://home.comcast.net/~vvnapoli3/NewOPEN.wmv

Again, it's still a work in progress, and the VO isn't the one I'm using, I've actually hired a professional VO girl that I know and she's a whole lot better than me!

All these shots were taken using the DVRigPro. It was shot at 30P with the other settings being that of F5.

As I get more shots edited I'll post more.

Thanks,
Vince

I liked that. You kept it simple and that worked out well. Although wasn't enough to change my mind (not that I want to get into THAT over here...;) ), it definately worked out... ;D

Re: rough cut of open

Thank you both for your comments!

taubkin, This is only the open for the rest of the 30 min documentary. Now the hard part comes, trying to narrow down the 20 hrs worth of footage!

Got some great stuff though! Imagine 20 college kids walking through New York wearing those shirts! We got quite a mixed reaction, ranging from extreme anger, to people 100 % for the group... It was definatly interesting :)

Thanks again,
Vince

Regarding the VO, if you're going for an objective doc approach, you should consider revising the "we" to "they" to separate yourself from the subject.

Re: rough cut of open

Gabe,
Point well taken! I never thought of that... I think I'm going to change the "we" to "you" to make it more personal to the viewer.

Thanks!,
Vince

It's nice to see someone take a stand with their work [either for or against] and also do it well. Good job.

Re: rough cut of open

Looks good , and, I agree it is good to see someone take a stand (even though our opinions differ) when most americans are complacent. I'd like to see the final when you are finished.

Re: rough cut of open

Thanks guys,
All this feedback is very encouraging! This was definately the toughest project I've done, and I think it's because it is a subject that hits close to home for me. About 6 months ago, I asked myself what I was really doing to back up my "views", and the answer was not a whole lot! Talk is cheap, so I wanted to do something. Then, the girl I'm dating told me about the walk, and I thought hey, maybe I can meet up with them and shoot some footage. (When would any of us turn down an oppertunity to use our DVX?! Especially in NY!) She checked with the guy in charge, and the next thing you know I'm being flown to NY to shoot a doc!...
So I'm very excited about this project, and can't wait to post bits and pieces of it along the way to get your feedback! It's so awesome to me to be able to get the opinions and comments from people who understand the art and technology! I am learning so much from this board! Thank you Jarred for creating it!

no problem Vince.. very nice to hear your flying high, keep us updated!

Re: rough cut of open

Interesting work. Maybe you could add a section about conservatives who care about life AFTER babies are born, namely conservatives who support anti-poverty programs, support for childcare, mimimum wage/working wage standards, environmental protection (specifically focused on childhood asthma), and the biggie--affordable child healthcare. For THAT part you'll probably find precious few proponents on the conservative side, and your footage will be a little thin, I would expect.

But hey, nobody said filmmaking was easy.

Re: rough cut of open

I appreciate your imput, however out of respect for the board, the moderators and the rules for this board, I want to refrain from getting into political arguments/debates. This area is for offering tips/feedback on the techincal and creative aspects of our work, not for political debating, arguing, etc.
Again, I'm not bashing your opinion or even arguing with it :D , just dont want to get into it here.
Thanks,
Vince

Re: rough cut of open

I totally understand. I do, however, think your piece would be stronger with more journalistic balance. Is that not a worthy critique?

Thanks.

Re: rough cut of open

Josh,
Thanks for your professionalism! I was a bit worried, as this topic tends to bring about a lot of anger and as I learned in New York, you never know what kind of reaction you'll get!

Your critique is definatly a good one! One which I both agree and dissagree with. The video is being done for a very pro life anti-abortion group, and this is what they asked for. If I were doing a documentary for a news magazine per se, I would definiatly get the balance needed to be completely unbiased. You know what I mean?

Thanks again,
Vince
