rough car mount tests

Rich Lee

I shoot Pirates.
hey guys, i mounted a pole with a camera mount to the bumper of my jeep, and did some tests out in the desert. think i may try and do a little jeep spot using some shots like this. i put together a little edit with music. i didnt go in with plan so the cut doesnt really go anywhere. the footage is a bit shaky at times, i will try and figure out a way to stabalize it more in-camera, also, maybe shoot with a higher shutter speed and do some post stabalization.

ah, i also shot a bit of stuff not attached to the car just to do some nd/polarizer filter tests.

Re: rough car mount tests

I think this footage looks fantastic! Great for a commercial!
If you don't mind, can you elaborate on...
"i mounted a pole with a camera mount to the bumper of my jeep"

Re: rough car mount tests

Solid; I love the humble approach.  You know Im kind of a fan of the shaking in an off road spot.  Gives one the sense of a rocky ride and the speed.

Those filters really do the trick.  Good stuff.  :)

Re: rough car mount tests

yes, tell us everything you used, especially filters or post materials to gain those amazing colors! camera settings, etc. also, maybe you can sketch a diagram of the mount you used... haha, i dunno. i'm impressed and really want to know how you got those shots.

Re: rough car mount tests

thanks guys, yes, filters are good. the nd grads and polarizers give you the dark sky, and i further enhanced that in AE by messin with levels such. camera set to 24pa with i think cine on. pretty sure anyway.

here is a pic of the mount...

the mount is a bogen accesory arm, you would use it to mount multiple heads to a single tripod. i picked one up for less then 60 bucks a few months ago. more info and a pic here

http://www.bogenimaging.us/product/templates/templates.php3?sectionid=4&itemid=879

i mounted a 501 head to it and drilled 2 holes in the underside of my bumber and bolted the mount to it. in the pic the arm is extended as far as it will go. but i am going to pick up a 6' piece of tubing this week that i can use to replace the one it has. so i should be able to get a little further out, the longer length also means i will be able to reach further into the bumper with the second mount, giving it a bit more stabalization. the blue strap is for safety in case the bolts break, unlikely, but u never know..

Re: rough car mount tests

Well I would like to say - THAT ROCKED! :D

Very impressed at all aspects of your piece. WD

Re: rough car mount tests

your welcome for the info ;D

yes i agree john, definitly want to get some shake into the spot. there were a few shots that were way too shaky. i also want to go out and do some stuff on big rocks and in the water, just to show how jeeps can go damn near anywhere, not just dirt roads like u see in most suv/truck spots. these vehicles can do so much more then what u see on tv. i need to see about renting some underwater housing for that water stuff. also i think i will shoot with a high shutter speed so that you can see all the little droplets and rocks and dirt kickin up in the air. should be fun!

Re: rough car mount tests

Consider getting a shot from on top of the Jeep as well; like looking down onto the road with the hood in the picture but with camera mounted from the rear.

Re: rough car mount tests

Damn that's an pretty good shoot. Some of it was surprisingly stable while others were a little rugged.

Really good job overall though, image quality was great.

Re: rough car mount tests

That just totaly rocked!... No pun inteneded...LOL
I was thinking doing the same thing here in Utah, infact I thought you shot that near here becuase it looks so much like the Bonniville Salt Flats near the Great Salt Lake! I am going to be shooting alot this summer with my Uncles down in Moab... The have built some monster jeeps do to the jeep rallie thing all year round.
Take the advice of Dan_Lahav, I built his camera rigs they totaly rock!

Re: rough car mount tests

does Dan_Lahav have some interesting rigs? got a site?

i shot this about 80miles N/E of los angeles in a dry salt lake bed, near the town of mojave.

have fun shooting your stuff bryster, you got some good country out there to mess around in. post some stuff when u get it done.

thanks for all the compliments guys!

Re: rough car mount tests

Yes Rich
I will have to post some. I just did a video of my uncle's Camping rig. It is a Kenworth made into a Motorcoach/5thwheel. He has a mural of an old jeep of his looks pretty cool. I will have to post it... We are trying to sell it on ebay. I will post my grabs and video when done.
Oh also Yes... Dan does have a web site... http://www.dvcamerarigs.com
Check it out!

Re: rough car mount tests

Sorry Rich... It was Danslak that has the site... Not Dan-Lahav
sorry about the confusion...
