Hi. I am thinking of selling my Nikon 24-70 to fund a Rokinon Cine Lens set.. 14,16,24,35. Has anybody used them with Nikon DSLRs? What are your thoughts? I plan to use it on my D800 and HVX200a. Thanks
The 8mm, 35mm and 85mm are awesome (the 8mm needs to be shaved to work on FF, but after that it works fine).
The 24mm is kind of a lottery (there are good and bad copies, you don't know what you'll get).
The 14mm is sharp but on FF it has some ugly mustache distortion (on APS-C it's a much less ugly barrel distortion).
No idea about the 16mm (only that I believe it's an APS-C-only lens).
Don't do it if the only way you can afford it is to sell your zoom: that's silly. Assuming that's the 24-70 f-2.8, that lens is a really good investment and you should definitely keep it. I have Canon's version of the same range and also some Rokinon cineprimes, and they are good because they are fast, but you have to change them and that introduces other problems. Furthermore, they don't really shine on their own until you have a follow focus to take advantage of heir gearing, which as you know is another significant expense. Definitely keep your zoom, even if it means acquiring primes more gradually.
It depends on your preferences. I don't have any zoom lenses, I don't want any zoom lenses, the only ones that can match the IQ from a decent prime are REALLY expensive. And I don't mind changing lenses, I usually have the time to do it.
I just decided to keep it. Yes, its the Nikon 24-70 2.8G (don't know if there are other Nikon 24-70 versions). I bought the 14mm Cine as a start. So far, it flies really good on the HD-4000.
