Rokinon cine lenses arriving!

Man, its nearly impossible to get these things through B&H in the EF mount. The are always backordered, so I sign up for a notification for when they are back in stock. As soon as I get an email I try to buy one, but if you're late for a few minutes they run out of stock. These things must be flying off the shelves. I managed to get a 35mm at one point, but still waiting on the 14mm and 24mm.

The funny thing is that while it is impossible to get the Rokinon brand lenses, the Samyang ones are all in stock. I know that they are the same item; but is there something less desirable about the Samyang name (in terms of brand recognition for trying to sell them secondhand, or is it just better to not have a 'mixed' brand set of lenses)? Maybe something to do with warranty?

To be honest, with lenses this cheap, I don't think re-sale factors into many people's minds. They're owner-operator lenses.

It might be the warranty. I know certain of the "name badges" are only used in certain countries. I think only Rokinon promotes in the US. I did resort to buying a Samyang in the 8mm cine sort of by accident. I didn't even notice it was Samyang until later, but thinking about it the lens I bought may be grey market.

The lens I'm really jonesing for is 85mm Cine. It's the one I wanted from the beginning. The 85mm photo lens is a really superior lens and I expect the cine to be the same. The 85mm will be the most versatile of all the primes. It's superb for for close-ups; very sharp with wonderful bokeh. And yet a modest telephoto (expecially when coupled with a 1.5 crop factor). And yet its fast, fast, fast! :)

There's a reason that Sony's PL set is 35, 50 and 85mm. You can shoot 90% of everything with those.

Ahh, November is just around the corner.

For what I´ve seen the 35mm 1.4 is superb. These are exciting news, these lenses perform really well and the prices are great. I keep saying the Zeiss are a ripoff. Glad to be proven. Now we just need a 50mm and a 135.

Please,
Zeiss lenses have superior built quality. They have precission fluid control and yes they last you 10x longer then any plastic lenses. If you make money there is no problem to buy cheap Zeiss Ze,Zf glass. After all people are spending at least $4-5000 per PL Primes.

When looking for CA you want to look for Green/magenta fringing on high contrast edges right before and after the plane of focus. Try looking at a chart, or even a bright lampshade or windowsill edge. A piece of bubble wrap looked horrible on a Zeiss 35mm ZF @ 1.4 . It will be worst wide open of course.

Yea it has some CA wide open but it is the sharpest lens i have ever owned full open. Built quality is awesome. It is such a "bad" lens it is very often used by many people including P.Bloom on many tests :-)

Haha, thats true.

Ok, to hell with it. I just ordered the 14mm & 24mm Samyang brand cine lenses from B&H, along with the 35mm Rokinon cine lens. Now, about that 85mm & 50mm....

BTW; has anyone seen the upcoming 24 tilt-shift lens? Looks pretty sweet.

No zooms.

They are cineavising existing 35mm prime lenses.

So far the 8mm, 14mm, 24mm and 35mm are on the market, and the 85mm is on the way (in December). They are working on the 50mm; should be out in in 2013. That will be it unless they design some new ones from scratch (as in not based on current still lenses).

Off topic but I ordered and have the Rokinon 8mm fisheye (Nikon mount). If anyone needs any info on it, just let me know.

Long shot, but do you have any M4/3 type camera? AF100, GH2?? I would like to see what the 8mm looks like on this extensive type of crop.

Here is 8mm fully open (courtsey of Michael Dalton of REDUSER), many are saying it's not sharp until f5.6.

for 4/3rds just imagine your crop on this image.

I've seen examples of people showing what it may look like when you crop the middle of the image out, but I'm just being a little bit ignorant as I want to actually see what it will look like on a 4/3 camera, I just have this notion in the back of my mind that it will look different.

I'm going stupid.

I can photoshop it for you, but is that frame from EPIC full frame cropped to 2:1 ?

- Red and Blue are APS-C sensor sizes
- Green is 4/3
- Aqua is 2/3
- Purple is 1/2
- Yellow is 1/3

I'm getting confused, when a camera crops a lens, it does it from the center of the lens, right?
So the center of any fisheye lens is the LESS curved part of the image right?
Then it would have a different look to just cropping a larger sensor size camera shooting with the same lens?

Am I just being silly??

Yes you got it.
