I dunno. It just bugged me ever since I was a kid. Why fly a snowspeeder around and then hop out to get into your X-Wing, when you could just take some shots from the X-Wing, hold them off for a little while, then take off?
(And why does a society which doesn't use the Roman alphabet name its ships after it, because they look like the letters? Probably for the same reason they use Arabic numerals! But that's a discussion for another day.)
I agree,
And there are plenty of things I noticed as a kid and youth - X-wings have jet turbine sounds and air intakes. Yeah that works great in space. The AT-ATs while so scary and cool when you are a kid seeing them approaching like monsters...who in their right mind would make a high center of gravity walking thing to traverse terrain when a rolling/track vehicle would be much, much better?
About the ship names utilizing alphabet letters as names... Didn't an outside company (Incom) produce the ships (at least the X-wing). The rebels merely bought/acquired the ships. So the society from which the Incom company was founded could be from somewhere else and thus use the Roman alphabet even though some of the end user customers may not. It's a galactic market, right?
But we all know the names X,Y,A wing etc were due to the shape of the ships resembling the letters. They knew the kids would be paying attention to all the vehicles and the huge merchandising that would result from the films.
But I find it interesting that they went to all the effort to come up with all the "nerdy" background info such as the vehicle manufacturers, specs, cultural attributes, languages and all the other stuff to create the whole Star Wars "universe" that serious fans would get into.
May be one factor that has aided the longevity of it all
