Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

I have to say that something about this trailer feels off to me. In looks interesting in terms of content, though not enough to fully judge either way.

However, the look and feel of the footage feels wrong; too digital and contemporary (shaky cam, etc) compared to Episode VII and even compared to Episodes I-III. Color palette is also very different from Episode VII at least.

It feels like an imitation, almost like a high-quality fan film. It does not feel like Star Wars, in my humble opinion...

There's no question that oversaturation is a risk, and a big one at that. Plus, major dillution of the "specialness" of the "main" episodes.

However, right at this moment, oversaturation hasn't quite set in yet, and Rogue One follows on the heels of an Episode VII which a lot of people found disappointing, and it seems to hit a lot of notes that Ep VII didn't. At least for me, and I think I'm probably not alone. So, I'm looking forward to it.

At some point, it'll be too much, though.

I had a similar thought, but honestly, I think everything's going to. Ep VII felt that way to me, too.

Fan-film though it may seem like, it's the kind of fan film I'd make if I were interested in doing a Star Wars fan film (which I'm not). Contemporary to the original trilogy, dealing with something other than the Jedi (at least in the main, looks like).

But my question is, will Rogue One be hyped to the Olympic levels Episode VII was?
It won't be hyped to quite the same level due to the short time span between releases, but I don't think that people are going to hype it any less than the supposed "main Episodes" - VIII, IX.

I think the difference in visual characteristics can likely be attributed to the fact that they are "ok" with this for the anthology films... it's the branching out of the series as it is.

When you look at the incredible care and attention they put into matching filmstocks, lighting, style, etc. for the new trilogy, it seems intentional they are saying here "lets branch out of the main story line a bit - both story and theme wise, and aesthetically.

Given how good it looks (albeit different), I'm all for that. It feels like a relative, in the same family but not immediate family. I think we're going to see a lot more of this subtle divergence in the stand-alone anthology films.

If they're successful, perhaps the makers of some of the more prominent and popular fan films may have some opportunity.

There's speculation that Felicity Jones' character may be tied to the new trilogy as Rey's mother... which would explain the casting choice, and help tie in the universe spin off films to the others.

Well, I suppose that if she's Rey's mother, and Luke, as strongly hinted, is Rey's father, then it would make sense that the guy in the trailer is Biggs, because she and Luke would have to meet somehow.

But that's total fanboy speculation.

I don't think that necessitates the Biggs connection, and the Jyn (F.Jones) + Rey connection is less fanboy speculation and more business speculation ;)

Looks great to me. Seems pointless to pontificate too much at this point. Some of the reaction online today is exhausting to look at.

Absolutely.

Kudos to IMDB and the film makers for not revealing the character names of primary actors. Internet nerds (myself included) can only speculate who might be playing Biggs Darklighter, Moff Tarkin and Porkins.

I noticed that as well. There is, of course, the distinct possibility, and maybe likelihood, of "none of the above." Other than Mon Mothma (because who ELSE could that have been?), I'd say it's wide open to be anybody.

Another white, English accented, butt kicking heroine no less...I'm not against that, but, you'd think so soon after Force Awakens, they wouldn't repeat themselves like that. Just for variety's sake. Trailer looks great, though.

Actually, in the future, everyone will talk with an English accent. #fact.

I forgot to post this a few days ago, but what's up with the status of Rogue One and the reshoots?

All gossip and hearsay, of course:

Corroborating the story is The Hollywood Reporter: “This takes place just before A New Hope and leads up to the 10 minutes before that classic film begins. You have to match the tone!” it was told, with reshoots aiming to provide a lighter mood and sense of fun.
(Ugh - SF)

Instead, Disney and Lucasfilm “are just trying to find that perfect balance between edge and what we know Star Wars to be.”

^ There's tons of gossip articles online, here's one. Plenty more to be found if you Google it.

If the reshoot thing is true and the final movie turns out to be a turkey, you know every true fan is going to want to see the original footage. As discussed on this board in the past, Disney was supposed to be "hands off" the Star Wars universe, but maybe the inevitable has happened? How could it not?
