RogerDeakins.com

Well, the splash page has that message as does the forum... but if you directly link past the splash page, you can at least log in and still get access to his lighting diagrams. I just DL'ed all of them incase the site further deconstructs.

I did as you did and logged in. However my attempts to reach the lighting diagrams were foiled by failing php queries. It's possible php was shut down with the forum, leaving the hard-coded pages intact.

Does anyone have these diagrams in a .zip they can offer up?

Michael

For a limited time only..... Link Removed.

I'll take it down when we all get over the initial shock/loss. lol

I'm sure this is in some kind of violation of the user agreement.... but what is the worst that could happen? I get to meet Roger Deakins in court? :) That would be awesome.

PS: I'm a big fan of your work Morlan... I believe I have emailed you in the past. I hope you are doing well these days.

Best,

-Ryan

Ryan,

Thanks for the zip and thanks for the kind words. I took a moment to scan your site. I particularly like your work on "Gameshow." I also appreciate your taking the time to educate others. Your article on camera reports is incredibly important to entry-level 2nd a.c.'s.

Best,

Michael

I was at ground level in that thread. Actually the first person to respond made a joke because the questioner kept asking if it was an O'Connor head and Roger insisted he only used Arri gears or Ronford fluid heads. The remark was "so Roger you're telling me you've never used Ronford heads?". It was pretty funny given the circumstances but I guess the questioner felt slighted by the remark and the fact Roger's patience may have been running thin with being repeatedly questioned about something very basic and used so often.

From what I could tell the guy was a real nutbag. The reason he couldn't make it in the industry was probably because was totally off his rocker. After the incident I even went so far to email Roger to reinforce how important the forums were to all the members and he was keeping good humor about it, even joking about the incident (the questioner suggested in strong language that Roger move back to the UK and never return to the States, Roger joked this was a little offputting as he was already a U.S. citizen). I guess the questioners really had too much time on his hands and really offended Roger and his wife, who helps him run the site.

Yes the guy's name was "kamerawhore" and apparently he was ashamed to ever use his own name, instead opting to sign his posts "John Doe". I suppose he thought he would hurt his career with his diatribes, but I can't imagine he had much a career to begin with. If anyone can track down who "kamerawhore" is, I hope there is a swing gang somewhere who will break his kneecaps.

No problem guys. Glad to be of service.

Morlan, thanks for checking out the site!

Davidave,

Thanks for the information. As much as this individual ruined a wonderful thing, as long as he does not jeopardize anyone's safety, I think just being himself is enough punishment. As much as I'd like to serve this guy a knuckle sandwich, as I reflect upon the story he told (READ HERE) I realize that where-ever he is, he is undergoing more torment than any angry cinematography mob could offer.

I would have been freaked out too if I was Roger... it's crazy lunatics like that dude that end up snapping and making rash decisions.

I think the guy's main issue was that he thought everyone else was the problem. I felt that way when I read his original story and it was only confirmed when he went off the farm.

Agreed.

I just checked that out and I wish I had studied a little more before I 2nd a.c.'d for the first time.

Is there something like this for 1st AC?

Thanks man.

I started to write an article called "Focusing On Set". It covers the 1st AC's duties of pulling focus. Had techniques, tools, etc. Also covered laying marks and etc. Some really cool stuff.

Never finished it. I moved on to other topics and will someday return to the article and finish it. Nothing available today. I'm in the middle of finishing the first of a three part series regarding lighting. I might go back and finish the focusing article if you are really that interested in it.

Not too sure what we can do - short of creating a society of vigilante cinematographers - to "weed" this guy out. Seems like natural selection is/has already taken its course.

The situation sucks but the damage is done. Mr. Deakins was very generous with his time and knowledge. Unfortunately, someone forced the seasons to change.

Perhaps one day the site will come back. I'm thankful it lasted as long as it did.

Yes those are the facts. No we can't do anything about it. There are plenty of precautionary measures Roger could have taken about this individual... but all would most likely further angered the said individual. The best 'non-personal' way to end the harassment was to shut the site down entirely. As stated, Roger hopes this down time will allow the individual to move on.

I'm sure Roger has the best idea of any threats that may or may not have been made against his well being and will pursue further action if he decides it's necessary.

Important update? Weed this guy out? Issue that needs to be addressed? I'd put that detective kit and pitchfork back in the barn. As for the aggressor, I'm sure just being himself is punishment enough.

I'm definitely interested in the focusing article, but I don't want you to feel at all obligated to finish that one instead of the lighting articles (I'm excited for those too). I'll definitely read it whenever it's completed. I'm working as a 1st AC for the first time in a few weeks and feel like I might be missing something. There are surely some other articles on the web, so I'll look around for those.
