Was going through my usual routine when I found this message at Roger Deakins's website...

Thanks to the vindictive and abusive behavior of one individual, we've decided to shut down this site.

This was a hard decision for Roger since he has put alot into this site. However, the abuse and the threats were taking away from the goals of the site and it was just too much. In the end, we were just providing an arena for this abusive behavior and who needs to see that?

This loss is very unfortunate, as we will no longer be able to access the knowledge and resources of one of the best cinematographers of our time.

Gordon Willis Strikes Again ...

Seriously a huge loss. Why not track the culprit and let nature take its course?

Sad.

DogDay.

Apparently the person posted a photo of Roger operating a camera on a Ronford Baker head, he asked him if it was an O'Connor head, Roger replied that the head was indeed a Ronford Baker, and then the guy flipped and claimed that the reply was rude... Apparently he was hounding both the webmaster and Roger through email, making threats etc. so that was all she wrote.

That seems like a really odd thing flip out about. Too bad it happened as I learned a lot from that site.

Damn! I only just found out about the site and it's closed! :( Sounded like it was a killer resource.

Sounds like a strange reason to close his site though? It's quite easy to ignore/delete/block emails, he could even block entire domains and never hear from the culprit again? It must be much more than that?

This is so sad...

Deakins was such a nice guy all the time. He was incredibly helpful and informative with every single answer.

hahahahaha! Made me laugh really hard.

In seriousness, very sad the website went down. Very strange Deakins/Webmaster (his brother or someone right?) didn't have the protocol to handle or evade a single individual. Like all matters, there was probably more to it. I guess you'll have to mercifully hold all of your questions for the next ASC open house which is in...... About 350 days or so.

The person that's to blame for the site being shut down seemed pretty unstable. He/she went by the name 'kamerawhore' and had posted a few weeks back about his/her frustrations with breaking in to the film industry. The rant was very wordy, at times aggressive and showed a serious distaste for the professionals that this person felt were undeservedly in his way. A few folks empathized with him, offering some good advice. Roger chimed in to second that advice. It was a good post overall.

It was when this same person asked Roger about a tripod head, referring to a photo in a magazine. He insisted Roger used a certain brand...Roger insisted that wasn't the case. The person insisted it WAS the case, accusing Roger of not even looking at the picture he linked to. Roger INSISTED that he has never shot with that type of head. The person took this as a rude response and went on a bit of a rant. Someone responded, siding with Roger in some way and the poster went off. He posted a massive, hate filled vindictive response and copied and pasted it in every thread. He insulted both Roger and the people he felt were kissing his ass.

So I think the unusual thing is this person didn't seem to be some random troll. It was a genuine reader of the board that lost his ****. Pretty messed. I don't even want to know what sort of emails he sent to Roger and the webmaster.

Still, really sucks the site is gone. One person ruins it for everyone.

Well, the splash page has that message as does the forum... but if you directly link past the splash page, you can at least log in and still get access to his lighting diagrams. I just DL'ed all of them incase the site further deconstructs.

Still can't believe someone would flip like that. Thank god I wasn't on a set with him/her. Sounds like the kind of person who would want to start shooting... and not film or video.

There has to be far far more to it that what has already been established I mean who would close a site over one user? Whatever the reason it's a great shame.

it would seem like leaving the site up and simply disabling the message board and email for the domain would be appropriate. A shame to lose all the knowledge already up on that site.
