Rode Wireless Go II

Good question. I should have made a note of which unit it was that had the glitch before.

I think it was the same one but can't be 100% sure.

I would definitely suggest labelling the units and keeping an eye (ear?) on them moving forward.
It can help you sort out whether it is a one-off issue or a problem with the model overall.

So I was using my units yesterday - with the new firmware - and have run into an odd and somewhat concerning problem

On one of the units I'm getting a frequent faint but noticeable click.

You can hear it on this clip here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1pl9kcQ8W1DcJArhh6L_SBGSF48R3U6LP/view?usp=sharing

It's particularly noticeable when it's quiet (eg the other person is speaking).

It only happened on one unit but happened repeatedly through the day, and seemed to happen whether I used a plug in lav or the built-in mic.
It's never happened before and when I tested it again today it didn't seem to happen.

Zooming into the wave form it seems to be an incredibly brief click - as if a single byte was going wrong.

Anyone else experienced anything like this?

Nathan,

I used the units (latest update installed) for a couple of hours over the weekend and neither TX had the issue you described. If your problem persists I would exchange your system if it's still within the return period or contact Rode support...

Yet another firmware update (with usual odd numbering: now 1.6.0), this time with a video about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXuewOlvecg

The standalone recording doesn't seem hugely appealing to me (why not monitor if you can: clothes noise is such an issue with lavs), but the pad is of use. Not sure what level of pad it is though: nothing in the video and still no firmware info. But good that Rode are increasing the functionality, and, indeed, they promise more.

Cheers,

Roland

Just to add that I have heard back from Rode and the new pad is quite subtle, reducing the TX input sensitivity by 4dB.

Cheers,

Roland

So I used my RWGO2 over the weekend and it was even worse. Multiple corrupt recordings (where Rode Central crashes the moment you try to export) as well as lots of clicks and some weird digital distortion.
I've now sent the units back and received a replacement.

Hopefully that'll fix all the issues. Will report back.

Wow. Hopefully it was a hardware issue and thats the end of it.
I would make sure to label your replacements so you can keep track of which recordings came off which specific unit in case it happens again.

Keep us updated - and good luck.

Bad luck Nathan. Presumably you tried a factory reset before sending back and that this didn't help?

Cheers,

Roland

Yes I did - no difference. Got the new units and did a quick test and they seem OK.
Won't really know until I try them out for real.

I've had similar issues after updating to 1.6.0 firmware recently. One instance of loud clicks that were not luckily on the internal recording and went away after I rebooted both the TX and RX.

More concerning is an issue I had today where one of the clips refuses to export and crashes the Rode Central program. Both issues were with uncompressed audio recording so I'm half thinking that the internal processing isn't quite capable of handling it. I had no problems with compressed audio recordings.

I had exactly the problem of clips refusing to export. I found that it was usually one bit that caused the problem so by moving the in point I could get most of the recording.
However I was mainly using compressed so it seems to happen in both modes.

Don't know yet if it happens with my new units.

Ok, that's great to know! I sent the .ogg file to Rode and they were able to export the full audio for me. But good to know about this workaround as well! I did another factory reset and ran the recorder for 3 hours and had no problems so hopefully it's not a very common issue.

Just got back from filming using my replacement set of WGO2s.
Good news is no sign of clicks or glitches when monitoring (though I've not edited the footage yet).

Bad news - still getting corrupt files that won't export - Rode Central crashes immediately.

Out of 12 files on each unit (about 10 hours total) I've got 1 file on each like this (not the same one).

This is a serious problem - though hopefully fixable in software.

I'm using compressed recording and running RC on Windows.

Rode support were able to export the audio for me when I sent them the .ogg file that you can access from the finder. Let them know you have this problem. I do hope they can solve it in firmware.

I'm still waiting for them to send me the audio from the last lot of corrupted files I sent them. But I'll certainly let them know I'm still suffering the problem.

I'm on my third set of this system, and they have all exhibited this problem - and continue to do so. The clicking, which occurs randomly every few seconds, is present in the on-board backup recordings, and so is nothing to do with transmission. I've flagged it up with support, and they've pointed me towards their repair centre. Curiously, it only seems to happen during the first few minutes of recording.

I do have a theory, but haven't had time to test properly yet - I think (hope) that it may only occur when the transmitters have been turned on before the receiver. I have a shoot tomorrow where I'll be testing this theory out...

Long shot. If the talent/s that you are using the TX unit/s on are carrying mobile phones with them and they have the 2.4/5.0 GHz wireless turned on on their phones try taking the phones off them and see if the problem persists. Someone said to me ages ago, nothing related to the Rode mics per see but that sometimes frequency hopping on nearby phone WiFi frequencies or other WiFi devices can sometimes cause audio splatter across adjacent WiFi channels causing click and pops. The further from a phone is from a tower can exacerbate the problem as the phone is using higher power to maintain a connection to the phone tower. Seeing that these Rodent mics are WiFi based it might just be worth checking out in case this is the issue. Another extreme test that may help diagnose the problem. Don't laugh now! As a test try wrapping aluminum baking foil around the transmitters. This will limit their transmission power but it will also shield to a great degree any spurious interference from other close WiFi sources. Does that make a difference? You say it seems worse when you first run the mics. Are all the crew/talent close to one another with WiFi and or Bluetooth sources turned on on your phones when you do your original mic placement/testing on the talent? Bluetooth polling can cause problems. Are you near any WiFi routers, microwaves, etc when this happens? Then if you go outdoors or change location does the clicking disappear or reduce? Many things to consider when chasing interference which I feel this clicking is. I can't remember whether you were using the TX units 'naked' or whether you were running Lavs into them. Try different Lavs if you were running Lavs. Try two TX units close together one naked and one on a Lav. Any differences there? Some Lavs are not well shielded and their cables work as antennas and can pick up interference.

In fact some years ago with Atomos video recorders, they could cause clicking on audio when their internal circuits were power sensing and hopping between the two battery mounts on the back. In fact, they introduced a menu setting called the "D Tap" setting which stopped this power monitoring process between the two battery ports so when you were running D Tap power the battery port sensing between the battery ports was turned off. Not the same thing and not pertinent to your problem but more as an illustration that issues like this often can cause a lot of headaches before being sorted out.

Good luck troubleshooting!

I suspect the same, gotta test it!

Thanks Chris for those suggestions, much appreciated.

The problem has occurred in several locations, including remote farm land, away from buildings etc. I always ask my contributors to lay down their mobile phones. I'm using lavs, but I've tried 3 different mics, and the problem occurs irrespective of this.

I'll report back after my shoot tomorrow.

I have good news. We shot in 4 different locations today, with different contributors each time. I made sure not to turn on the transmitters until the receiver was on, and hey presto, I didn't hear a single glitch all day. I may report this finding to Rode.
