Rode VXLR+ adapter has a loose 3.5mm input

My brother just got a Rode VXLR+ adapter for my parents that has a loose 3.5mm input, and all the XLR pins are different lengths. Rode's website says the ground pin is supposed to be longer to prevent shorting, but that doesn't explain why the positive and negative pins are different lengths from one another. This was an Amazon purchase, so I'm wondering whether they got a clone or if Rode's quality control has gone down the tubes.

It worked in a quick test, but I find the loose 3.5mm connector really disconcerting, as I have $3 generic Chinese adapters with solid connectors.
