i am thinking to sell it, as gh3 ad a good mic inside. i bought it for another camera, but now i rarely use.i know it is a matter of taste, but i would like to know your opinion on having or not an external mic like the (mono) rode videomic (1 version)

The built-in GH3 mics are good for ambient sound and for recording voice very close to the camera. ( i.e. 1-2 feet from the camera )

The Rode VideoMic has more reach, so you will get better audio than the camera mics if your subject is farther than 2 feet from the camera. ( the Rode is also directional, so you can isolate your subject better than the camera mics do )

I have one (VMP) and it's fallen into backup-only duty, but that's only the way I use it... most of the time shooting with my GH is only for visuals, as a B-camera, relying on dual-system sound, or occasionally with a wireless lav system. I have other cameras I prefer to use for doc run/gun scenarios.

Were I faced with only having one GH camera and the option of VMP or no VMP, I'd definitely choose the VMP as it has an overall better sound, can somewhat isolate the subject, and is far less susceptible to catching handling and operator noise.

rode video mic is MUCH better. You can also get a 10 foot 3.5mm cable so you can bring the mic right up to your subject, put it on a boom or buy a $20 mic stand and use it for great audio quality. My tascam dr-40 broke so I can no longer use my NTG-1 into my tascam and I am getting almost as good audio using the rode videomic straight into my gh3 and gh2

ok..you convince me. i wll keep and start to use regularly my rode videomic. indeed the sound is better, though it is not stereo
