Rode videoMic?

Hey I am just wondering about the Rode videomic. It looks like a good deal and is said to be a very professional shotgun mic (for the price). I am thinking about buying it because my dvx100b has a slight camera noise like motor noise which I hope to get rid of. Has anyone used this mic? If so, does it provide cleaner audio then the built in mic; for example, less ambient camera noise like the humming and slight buzzing. Any recommendations would be great but I'm really concerned about price and what I like about the Rode Vide0mic is that it comes with a shock mount and windscreen. Thanks for the help.

Not by my dvx right now but don't recall it having an 1/8" audio plug that the Rode VM has.
Double check before you spend the $$$

I have a Rode NTG-1 Shtogun. It is a great mic, has XLR plugs, and fits nicely on the DVX100. It is a much better performer than the Rode Video Mic version, and I don't think it cost that much more. It also uses the 48v phantom power from the camera.

All the best,

Michael

I use the NTG-1. It has excellent sound for the price. I mount it with a second shock mount to the existing crappy shock mount on the DVX100b. No problem with camera noise at all.

I have the videomic and DVX but bought the little adapter to make it XLR compatible. It's a wonderful mic and you truly can't beat the price. I also have the boom pole which is solid and extends 10 feet(which itself was only 99 bucks!) RODE offers some great products that work just as good as those double its price

You don't want to use any mic that is not balanced with your camera that has balanced xlr connections. If you use an adapter to make the video mic work, you are losing the noise rejection a balanced system can give you and you are asking for trouble. For a little bit more you can get the Rode NTG1 and a Rode SM3 shockmount.

I am also not a big fan of the Rode boom pole because it is constructed of aluminium. For about $50 more you can get a short gitzo carbon fiber pole that deadens vibrations much much more. For about $280 you can get the 12' gitzo carbon fiber pole that gives you superior rech as well!!

Remeber that a shotgun is only as good as it's wind protection and the foam that comes with it is not enough. The cheapest (and least effective soloution is to add the Rode dead cat for about $70. This will help some, but the pros are using Rycote Softie, K-Tek K-Zepp or Rycote blimp (these all include shock mounts).

And remeber, you may not really even really want a shotgun (if you are filming mostly inside)! Read the stickies! You may want a hyper-cardioid (like the oktava mk012 w/ hyper cap)

The biggest improvement you can make will be getting the mic off the camera and 12"-24" above and in front of the talent on a boom where it is supposed to be!

There's 2 main reasons why I personally still use the VideoMic. For one, I originally bought it back when I had a GL-1 and really liked how it worked, so after getting my DVX I didn't want to shell out another 230+ bucks for the NTG1 when I could just pay 7 bucks to use the adapter. (a friend of mine has the NTG1 and I really couldn't hear a big difference between the 2 but maybe thats just me.) As far as the boom goes, I was basically in the same boat as the mic, I had it before, had the proper mic to use with it and never once had an issue, and don't see any reason to spend more money on a new one. I think its really a matter of personal usage though.

I think that those a perfectly good reasons to keep using your videomic and boom. If it is working well, great! I don't mean to insult your gear. If you were going to start from scratch though (assuming you had an XLR ready camera), would you agree that it would be better to spend a bit more and get the ntg1?

Thanks!

No worries :)
I suppose in the long run yes, I really don't have enough experience with the NTG1 to say for sure but all in all (spec wise at least) the NTG1 would be the better choice if it fits easily into your budget
