Hey everyone!
Quick and simple question... I’ve got a Rode Videomic NTG that plugs directly into my Canon 90D.
The microphone itself has a gain control nob from 0-20db along with some other great features. I’m wondering about the optimal settings between my mic and camera.
Currently I’m pulling my camera audio gain all the way down to only 1 notch or 1 level of audio (not sure what the dB is on that) and then pulling my NTG nob until it hits a level where my subject has good levels without peaking.
Is his a good way to do it? Does the camera need to be giving out any more gain?
The main reason I’m asking is because my audio sometimes leaves me unimpressed. I’ve had some distortion issues when my talent gets louder (a sort of rattling sound) but I’m watching their levels and they aren’t peaking at all. They are in a good range levels wise but there is still distortion. I wondered if it might be a settings or mic proximity thing (I have the boom as close as I can above them and out of frame so maybe 2-3 ft away).
