Rode VideoMic - no need for phantom power, right?

Correct. It runs on a 9v battery. It's a great mic for the money. Just remember that an on-cam mic is not ideal for critical audio. However, it is most certainly leaps and bounds above the little pinhole mic on the camera.

Thanks. But wait... I have just seen this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaBjpNmJspQ

Seems that for $30 ($10 more for the mic + $20 for the XLR to mini cable) the quality is better... BUT - if its so long that it goes into the frame, whats the point? How do I get around that... ???

I have a few issues with that test. He proclaims it obvious that the Azden outperforms the Rode in his test. Well... considering he posted it with YouTube's standard compression, the audio is chewed up and not really clear enough to discern. And this from a guy who can't get his camera in focus...

The test was performed in a very reflective box of a room... not a great place for a shotgun mic.

There wasn't much A/B comparison. He spoke for each mic for about 7 seconds, then thumped the mic a couple of times. Not really enough to hear what each mic really does.

On a personal note, I have never had good experiences with anything labeled "Azden." With Rode, however, I have never regretted a purchase.

As for a mic in the frame, there are some ways around it (extension brackets, etc.) that may not always be practical. It's important to buy keeping your lens in mind.

Everything C2V said.

Was the mic used in the start of that video wrapped in a wet sock or something? It sounded horrible, not something you should put out there if you're trying to convince anyone you're qualified to compare mics!

Pretty much anyone on this board is going to tell you this: "Friends don't let friends buy Azden gear". It may as well be a sticky.
