Rode Videomic hiss

So I just go the Rode Videomic yesterday. I turned on the -10 and low pass settings,
and turned the 5d to manual, yet I still hear a pretty loud hiss....

(I am using a new battery, but maybe it has been decaying at my stinky corner mart for too long).

Well remember, if there's no up-close sound to pick up, the camera's AGC will boost the signal until it hears something (or begins hissing).
Even with the new firmware, I believe you have to have an AGC defeat (Juicedlink DN101, DT454) to really be able to start eliminating issues like that. Or, just go for an external recorder :)

Well, turning it to 0 db, instead of -10 db, cut down on the hiss considerably. But I believe you are right. I have a Zoom h4, but I just hate the idea of monitoring the Zoom and 5d. Too much potential for me to get careless, especially with how you have to press it once to active it then a second time to record.

That juiced link is starting to look better and better.

From what I have listened to/read, setting your 5D's manual gain to 1 click above "0" and adding a juiced link cx211 (or similar preamp) and turning the cx211 gain up, really gives you a clean signal. The preamps in the 5D are extremely noisy whether you are using AGC or not.

You'd really be better off in the long run sticking with the Zoom as your primary audio. I don't believe there's a camera on the market that's going to match the recording control and quality of a specialised audio unit like that one.

For me, on-camera audio is for syncing only :)

Here's what I do though for a single-monitor setup:
I've got an adapter that takes the Rode stereo output to 2 xlr plugs and I use that to link the mic to the H4. I turn monitoring on, though off might give you a bit more of a safety margin as it will still monitor while recording anyway) and plug headphones in. I then take the line out from the H4 and plug that into the camera.

Electronically, that last step is not really correct as its line into mic - but that pushes the AGC down anyway and I haven't had any problems with it.
