Rode Procaster vs. RE20

Since Rode has lead to some debates here recently, I thought why not speak about another interesting aussie mic.
The RE20 probably is THE radiovoice mic and is a once in a lifetime investment, but Rode has already gained the reputation to put out quality at very low prices.
And for a VO every now and then, one maybe doesn´t need the best mic, but still a very good one.
Since the procaster resembles the RE20 and probably on purpose, I was wondering if the Rode ingeneers also managed to copy the sound of the popular EV mic...?
Anyone using it?

No.

Hey Ty,
just because this can be answered in a "yes or no" fashion, it doesn´t have to be or?
Does a NTG1 sound like a 416? No. (But it sounds very good for the price you pay or it sounds better than the more expensive ME66 aso...)

So how does it sound?:dankk2:

Gee, I thought everybody knew I had sound samples and reviews on my website, including a split track clip of the NTG-2 and a 416.

Why not head on over to the Audio folder of my online archive and take a listen yourself.

Ty Ford

Sorry Spartacus,
(Is that your real name?)

I somehow thought it was a 416/NTG-2 you were looking to compare.

I have not heard the Pro Caster yet. Podcaster, yes, but not Pro Caster.

The thing about USB mics is that their sound depends a LOT on the A/D chip. Since there isn't a preamp, the whole interactivity issue is moot.

That can be good or bad. The Centrance MicPort Pro is a neat thing, but in tests with my Schoeps mics, the sound was not as good as with my high end preamps. That may change over time, dunno.

In your first post your reply to my question, weather the Procaster sounds similar or as good as the RE20 was a simple "No.".
Now you admid that you havn´t actually heard it yet?
I´m speaking of this XLR mic http://usa.rodemic.com/microphone.php?product=procaster, not the USB verison (they may have the same capsule though...)

So does anyone have any REAL experience with the Procaster...?

I have, and I love it, but I can't compare to other mics, so my opinion doesn't really help.

I need to figure out how I stop/take out the mouth saliva noises though. :(

In the link in my post before there is a video of radio show host explaining the mic a little.
He´s talking about the right mic positioning to avoid those nasty sounds you described, take a look!

G'day Spartacus, I booked that radio guy Ken Sparkes for commercial spots and that demo is a good example of his actual sound. Never produced him with a dynamic RE20, he wouldn't cop it and he wouldn't do that RODE spot if he didn't like the mic.

And that demo is recorded straight to a Sony prosumer camera, with its crappy preamps. My guess is Sparksy wouldn't hang around while they rigged up a better system, cranky ole SOB. (There goes my Xmas card.)

He's been around many years too and most guys can actually withhold their explosive pop breaths while pronouncing a distinctive P. Trick of the trade.

I haven't run the dynamic Podcaster yet either, but it's not a USB mic versus the Procaster which is.

raphb, sounds like you might have a nasal problem. I broke my dose playing Aust. Rules football at school and I've got one.

One way to help stop excessive saliva is to gargle well with salt and warm water in the morning and 5 mins before the session. Voice work, I repeat that every hour. Also try a silent dehumidifier for the bedroom. Works for me.

Cheers.

Eat some apple slices. Water with some lemon in it is also supposed to help but apple is better. It thins your saliva so you don't get so much smack.

Drink salty warm water and then eat apple slices.. Sounds like a tasty snack :)

Thanks for the hints!
