NTG2 plus either Zoom H4n recorder or the best - a Marantz MD661 with the Oade brothers concert mod to make it sound much better

Thanks for the replies everyone, I ended up purchasing an NTG-2.

I am now looking for a relatively inexpensive preamp with phantom power, and a Zoom H4N.

If your NTG-2 is pre-loved, you might be able to xfer its 10yr warranty, check the Rode website. If it's new don't forget to register it.

And if you run your NTG-2 on battery, then swap to a 48volt supply, don't forget to take the battery out, if you forget it, it could go flat then leak.

This is one complaint that Rode get many calls about, this is not covered by that warranty.

Cheers.

The NTG-2 I purchased is used, though it is from Europe. Do you think there is a possibility I could still transfer the warranty? If so, what information would I ask for from the seller?

And I will most likely be running it on phantom power (if I can find a preamp), but what do you mean by "it will go flat and it will leak"? As in, the AA battery would go flat and leak, potentially damaging the microphone?

Hate to put you on the spot, but I appreciate your reply!

When a person buys a preloved Rode mic, they should register at the Rode website.
IF the first owner registered that mic for its FREE 10yr warranty then the new owner should be able to transfer that warranty to him or her.

If you have trouble, wait till they reopen on Jan 7 and shoot Rode Support an email, include the mics serial number.

Because of their great sound, Rode have now sold many thousands of their NTG-1 and 2 mics around the world.
Seems a few NTG-2 owners installed the battery and forgot about it when they started using 48V phantom power all the time.
When the battery lost all its charge some leaked battery acid and Rode gets calls about that, it's not covered by the warranty.
Yes if the leak is bad enough, it could cause damage to the surrounding metal.

Always use a new name brand Alkaline battery, never an elcheapo. When the battery gets low, change it before you notice reduced mic. performance.
If you didn't get an NTG-2 owners manual, you can d/load it at the Rode site.

Cheers.

Yo MOKHAN, when you try that Rode link, post the result here for others.

Some Rode buyers don't realise that the Rode 10 year warranty is free, no cost, gratis, but ONLY when they register their Rode mic at the Rode site.
And ppl can't register just any other brand mic ... yep amazing ain't it.

Cheers.

I just want to second what Allan has said. I was able to register my rode ntg3 and I bought it used. Allan was very kind in letting me know about the warranty a few months ago. Many thanks Allan!

Thanks Allan, I'll let everyone know how it goes once I receive the mic!

I have another question. I wanted to use the following setup: NTG-2 --> DT454 --> H4N, with the intention of using the DT454 JuicedLink preamp to compensate for the H4N's weak preamp (the notorious NTG-2 to H4N 'low levels' issue).

Others have informed me that the DT454 will be of no use in my set up, and will actually degrade audio quality. Is this true?

Roberts juicedLink gear is great but I don't know the H4N. Yep that setup could very well degrade your final audio result, 2 preamps in circuit is never good.

I'd get your NTG-2 first, run the H4N rig for a while, then record and keep a sample test recording, your voice should do it. Work on it.

Then rent or borrow a DT454 and record the exact same voice test, same location levels, everything.
Compare the 2, and actually write down your very first impressions, you might post those tests here for opinions.

The value in doing this is you're also learning, this thread is like a classroom, ha I hear the bell more after recess :)

Cheers guys.

The H4N has a best case RMS noise-floor of -66 dB, which is not great compared to other recorders. ( I get the same noise-floor reading from my new GH3 camera at it's lowest audio input level setting )

The Sony PCM-M10 recorder and the Olympus LS-12 recorder each have a RMS noise-floor of -75 dB from a LINE level signal, and the Tascam DR-100 MK2 recorder has a RMS noise-floor 0f -83 dB from a LINE level signal.

I haven't had a chance to test any of the JuicedLink gear yet, but listening to sample recordings seems to indicate that it has very little noise.

Okay, so I'm having an issue. Nomrulz (poster #1) offered to sell me his DT454.

I agreed and paid, though soon after, I figured out it wouldn't exactly work with my setup: I asked him for a refund (before he shipped). I haven't heard back from him since, though I see he has been online quite a few times. He never shipped out the preamp. I'm going to try filing a PayPal case; hopefully it's just a matter of him having been too busy to get back to me.

Hey, I shipped the PreAmp the day after you sent me the money. Sorry I didn't respond I was traveling. You should receive it any day now. I'll verify with the customs slip today. Sorry for the delay/
