For best results I recommend using it on the 5D II or 5D III

I pick up the beachtek model DXA-Connect which is connected to the 5d mkiii so I could use my Sennheiser Mic but found it not as good as I wanted it to be (photos) it is also a lot of stuff on a camera.

I was thinking of getting the Rode Mic that I could just hook straight up to the camera without having to use any other outlets to make it work.

Matt; does the Video Rode Mic you have hook straight up to the camera?

Yes, it hooks directly into the microphone input jack. It requires a 9 volt battery as well.

is there a long enough cable to be able to use it on a boom pole? I'm going to see if I can find it on the net.

What about it aren't you liking other than the form factor? A clean preamp is an important part of the audio chain. I don't have experience with the DXA but i have to imagine its a big improvement over the on board pre's. That being said, mic placement is probably the most important part of audio. Rarely is an on camera mounted mic going to yield good results.

It's your basic 3.5mm jack, so if you wanted to get an extension cord I'm sure it would work perfectly. It is also threaded underneath the cold shoe mount so you can attach a boom pole to it no problem. Not sure of the exact size of the threads, but I think it should work with most boom poles.
