All,

I am new to DSLR video. I shoot with a 5d and a 7d with a Rode MIC. For some reason each time i shoot i realize that i have alot of clipping on the sounds, the sound is basically unsuable.

COuld you please assist me on this. Any advise would be much appreciated

Which Rode mic? Where is it mounted (camera or boom-pole)? What audio settings on the cameras? What sounds are you recording?

A few details would help!!!!!!!

Thanks Bob for reaching out.

My best guess is simply level - as in too high. If the sound level in the room is high, then the rather basic audio features on DSLRs will not be able to cope. I think this is why so many use Beachteks and similar - just to get more control over what is going on.

If you could post a small clip we could hear, the results are quite easy to recognise.

I will definitely try this out guys .. thank you very much for all your help : Steve, BRH, Paulears and unclebob.. You guys are awesome!

In general, recording live music with DSLRs and even some regular cameras with on-board mics results in distortion like this because the systems were designed for dialog which is a lot quieter.

Padding down or using less sensitive mics may help, but you may also find using a good mixer with better gain controls works as well.
