Rode Blimp or Rycote S-Series 330!?

I have an s series for sale in the sales section. I've only used it once or twice but it performed excellently. Brilliant piece of kit, I just need to dowwnsize to on camera for a solo project I have

I'd get the Rycote S330. Great product and their shock mounts are amazing. I have a review of it on my website. Beware of the NTG-2 though... The blue rubberband in the XLR chamber doesn't let the XLR connector "snap". I've also experienced a lot of cabling noise with the NTG-2 in the S-330. When I bought the NTG-3 to replace the NTG-2, everything went away :)

Hi

I'm trying to decide on which to buy: Rode Blimp or Rycote S-Series 330.

Rode Blimp

Rycote S-Series 330

I have Rode NTG-2. I wonder which one is better. If not by much, then I'll buy cheaper one lol

thnx for your thoughts!

No contest - get the Rycote.

The Lyre anti-vibration mounts are far superior to the old "rubber band" method.

Definitely Rycote. The Rode basket is nice but waayy to big IMO. It's a bit heavier than the Rycote as well. Either will work well, but the Rycote has some form factors that the Rode just can't beat (i.e Size, weight, expandability). You can purchase just the separate sides of the S-series to accomodate different sized mics, which beats buying a new one for $350+. Oh and the lyres are quite nice :)

if ($Rode) {
printf("Goodluck with operating it!\n");
} else if ($Rycote) {
printf("Today's your lucky day!\n");
} else {
printf("If undecided, however, still pick Rycote!\n");
}

Well, the Rode reduces wind noise better. But the Rycote is cheaper. Though they are neck to neck with the wind coming straight on to the front of the mic, in actual use, the wind rarely hits the mic straight on. The Rode wins on side or back wind. So I'm glad I have both. I wish the Rycote had slightly longer hair to help it with side/back breezes.

There's always the option of putting an add'l layer of windjammer over the Rycote, but that certainly attenuates more high-fqy than ever wanted.

Rode Blimp can be used to house a mic as big and heavy as Rode NT4 (not sure about the Rycote kit you mentioned, but I guess it probably can't). However, if you have a blimp and you fly with your gear, it can be a headache to package a blimp.

Wind rejection is based on the volume of trapped air - so if the Røde has a larger volume it will reduce wind noise better.

BUT - the Røde is heavier and the old-fashioned O-ring suspension is not as good as the Rycote Lyres.

The Rycote hair is a special design to reduce wind and turbulance but not high frequencies - it is a clever design that I do not think any other manufacturer has managed to equal.

Nothing against the Rycote here! I prefer to use it. But if the wind is beyond a certain point I must choose the Rode. I'm stoked to have both!

Same Chad. We've got both the Rode Blimp and the Rycote 3 kit.

Out on location, we can't carry both and to stay safe we take the Blimp when we know or even suspect, the wind will blow stronger. No problems with its suspension or we couldn't use it.

Cheers.

The comparison was between the Røde and the S-series.

There will be less difference between the Rycote full windshield kit and the Røde as the Rycote kit has a Windjammer with longer fur and will be better.
