Thanks Rocketeer!

Barry, the (free) HD capture utility that came with the previous JVC, seems to be available nowhere. What was it exactly? Pixela? KDDI Labs? And is it really no where to get?

I heve to inform at my dealer, where I ordered my HD101, but he isn't specialised in JVC, so I don't expect that much...

It calls itself "Pixela HD Capture", and the editing software was from KDDI labs. Never tried the mpeg editor, just used the capture utility.

I don't know if it was ever commercially available, or as a download... it came on a CD with the HD1 camera.

Also, if you really need to capture HD100 footage, don't forget about HDV Rack -- it does it now, and it's a superb program for so many other uses too...

How do you export Fina HDV footage? as HDV back to a Tape? or do you super compress it to a DVD?

That's part of the problem. No satisfactory solution exists.

If you've not edited the footage, you can output back to tape losslessly. But if you've edited it, the recompression artifacts are severe, and the quality loss that happens makes going back out to HDV tape a not-pleasant solution. If you get ahold of a native-GOP editor like Liquid, it can output unmodified GOPs directly, but any GOP that's been modified will be recompressed so you'll see noticeable quality drops in your footage on any dissolves, around cuts, etc.

On an editor like FCP why not just play the video on the timeline and press record on the camera or deck. I don't think that recompresses anything. (I don't have HDV anything but I'm just throwing it out there).

unfortunately it won't be that simple.... as long as it needs to be mpeg2 again (HDV e.g.), it needs recompressing

Not so fast mezelf27. Liquid does not recompress HDV as Barry Green writes. Liquid does not touch GOP's that have not been edited. Only edited GOP's will be rendered and then the GOP reordered without touching the original GOP. Liquid and FCP use this method. All other editors right now will recompress everything

Barry, I've got nearly a year under my belt editing HDV and the block noise you refer to is not evident very often (small screen). We've had really great results even doing full histomatch corrections camera to camera in HDV.

x2mag68, There are alot of options for HDV like; WMV, DivX, H264 and DVD. When I write DVD I don't mean anything other than SD-DVD that we are used to. At least in Liquid you can edit your project to a completed sequence and then export it to DVD. It has that built in and does the conversion for you post haste. Meanwhile you still have the HDV (small files) for later when the powers that be decide on a format.

Don't be fooled HDV is for real and the format and codec are really good especially since there are such HDV native editors like Liquid and FCP (soon Avid XpressPro as well). Now that JVC has the 24PHDV solution in place, I think there will be many more opportunities across the board since the format has opened up to include film's frame rate (native in the codec).

Stephenlnoe, I'm saying that it does recompress GOP's that get edited. I said specifically that it *doesn't* recompress GOP's that don't get touched, only the ones that do.

The thing is, the recompression is significant, and leads to what Adam Wilt described as the Super 8 Tape Splice Effect, where your footage looks great, and then at the transition point it goes noticeably softer/fuzzier, and then as soon as the transition is over it goes back to looking good.

Barry,

Yes, I concur that the edits get recompressed. The edits that I do in HDV come out really well. I guess you watched the wmv I made off of the posted M2T's, do you see anything soft in that? I've seen what you're referring to out of Premiere and Vegas.

Part of our group uses FCP/HD and the other part uses Liquid 6.1. With those two editors our experience has been parallel with HDV. Very high quality output even on recompressed GOPs. We also have a Premiere Pro 1.5 editor in our group who uses Cineform and the results have been OK but I've seen what your talking about coming out of that edit station.

I thank you gents for posting the 720P24 clips. I'd rather work in 720P than 1080i and that's what the draw is to the HD100 (for me).

well, that was what I was saying too, altered is recompressed. But I believe I can imagine what you're saying stepenlnoe, recompressing is not THAT bad... right (quality wise off-course - it's always worse than the original, but perhaps not always that obvious?)

mezelf27, The frames themselves are not altered they are re-ordered in the GOP structure. This is similar to working in I frame only. The only frames that are recompressed are the ones that get an effect or color correction or transition applied. All of the others are not touched and remain the original HDV content off the camera.

I recommend Charles Poynton's book Digital Video and HDTV for a nice deep read on the subject of HDTV and formats and codecs.

I know, I was just referring to Nathyn's post, who seemed to imply that whatever filter you used, just recording with some kind of vtr would bypass the need of recompression, which obviously isn't true....

Anyhow, I posted on this board some time ago my regrets that there are so few MPEG editors that did not recompress. To my knowledge, by then, it was only MPEG EDIT STUDIO PRO, which isn't easy available. Vegas defenately recompresses...

by the way, I'm guessing you're talking about Pinnacle Liquid Edition Pro? Can it handle the 24p ProHD of JVC?

mezelf27, Yes Liquid 6.1 Pro can handle any HDV iteration. That was my worry because there was nothing for me to test it on until they posted the HD100 m2t files. Then I found that it is built right into the codec (superb codec). I like it much more than the Z1's 1080i for many many reasons.

Here is a shot of the files laying on the timeline and I spoofed their footage on the "HD100 + Mini35 Footage!!!" tread. Works fine and edits well on P4HT 3.4GHz.

I tell you, I'm leaning more and more toward the JVC offereing. This lens issue is an ISSUE though.

I was already more inclined to the JVC. The Sony was already available and much cheaper (over here over €3000 cheaper!), but could do nothing for me....

It seems like the better version of the XL2 with all issues fixed on that one (the XL2), and on top it's HD...
