Robin Hood - Zooms?

Just saw Robin Hood. I thought it was a terrible film but that's not why I'm here.

There seemed to be a number of shots using a zoom lens and I wondered what people thought of that? There seemed something really wrong with it in a period film?!??

I haven't seen Robin Hood, but I wouldn't say it's wrong to use zooms in a period film. Maybe it was just wrong the way they were used in Robin Hood, I don't know. Barry Lyndon makes effective use of zooms in a period piece. Check it out if you haven't seen it. I think it's easily one of Kubrick's best films.

Kubrick's zooms were slow and long, and compressed the image to make it look like paintings of the era. I'm betting Robin Hood had fast snap zooms.

Not quite that fast ala Tony Scott...but they seemed more like the kind of zooms you would see in "The Wire" (very TV) From a mid shot to a close up. Very curious!

I know what you mean about Kubrik's zooms and they worked well and seemed to really fit the work. The ones in Robin Hood really jumped out at me.

Kubrick's zooms also tell the story in part through revelation. I think part of Kubrick's mastery of cinema is utilizing zooms to withhold information from the viewer, and slowly reveal it to them for effect. I haven't seen Barry Lyndon for a while, but this technique is very prevalent in his other work, especially The Shining.

I think the only movie I've ever walked out on was Disney's Cars. That movie was horrible, and I don't think I even cracked a smile. I even made it through all the way through Confessinos of a Teenage Drama Queen.

yeah robin hood was a bit disappointing. i remember not liking the cinematography at all; it was too blue or "cool". and there was nothing terribly special about composition, either. the single most impressive shot was of the arrow in motion.

I think this is one that I will definitely pass on. The trailers make it seem pretty worthless to me. It looks like just another one of those movies that really isn't about the characters or the story, just about the style (and a style that got very boring to me quite a while ago).

It's a very good film, love the origin of Robin Hood, it's a mature look at a classic character. Well worth watching.

it would've been a good origin story, but not even the moor friend of robin hood was mentioned (i thought they were in jail together)

Well, I think that you need to take into consideration that the Moop probably wasn't in the original Robin Hood stories way back when. *wikis it*

Regardless, the SPOILER ALERT whole Magna Carta deal SPOILER ALERT was asinine.

Saw it 3hrs ago and liked it .. thought it was a period story for the current generation hence the zooms. Nicely balanced love story with action and FX all over the place.

Good screenplay but hard to follow in places .. you have to know some of Hood's history and the Habeas Corpus thing.

The multi audio crew might have Oked the mix but Russ Crowe pitched some of his ye olde English ADR lines to low and the speakers in the Orpheum missed 'em. Dear Cate just got passed the age line as Maid Marion.

I've worked with both .. Aussies, nice to see .. 3/5.

Cheers.
