RIP Vilmos Zsigmond

Wow, two of my heroes gone in one week (Haskell Wexler and Vilmos Zsigmond).

I worked for a couple of days in the lowliest of lowly PA positions on a scene Vilmos shot at a location in my home town in the late '70s. (No disrespect -- everyone I encountered just called him by his first name.) That would have been just a year or two after "Close Encounters." I spoke to him only briefly once or twice but just watching him work was an education and an inspiration. His mantra (at least on that shoot) was to keep it simple and almost everything was lit with only one or two lights, but looked wonderful.

I hope the next generation will be able to produce artists of the same magnitude as those two.
