RIP Phil Harris

I don't usually watch that (or any reality show), but I did see the BTS one. He seemed like a good guy, just trying to do his job.

Just watched the episode where Phil Harris had the stroke that killed him. Even knowing it was coming didn't lessen the blow. And just days before his son confessed to him on air after being caught stealing his pills that he was a drug addict. So sad.

I could be wrong, but the drug thing could have been scripted. In all the episodes before that one Jake shows no sign of being under the influence, only in that episode. If he was an addict I imagine he would have appeared like that at least a time or two before that episode.

On the other hand Phil's reaction looked pretty real, or he deserved an oscar.

Yea, Phil was a cool guy, my daughter liked him the best and i still haven't told her he passed.

RIP Capt

I think whenever anybody dies at 53 from a stroke, it should be considered shocking. It's definitely never expected.
Your comment was
"Damn, a stroke at 53!?"
I don't find a stroke at 53 all that shocking. Not at all. I work in the medical field though.

Now, anyone dying at 53 is young, I'll grant you that. If that's what you meant.

I've seen males in relatively good shape have strokes that left them with life altering disabilities, some as young as 35 years old.
They were smokers though and they also ignored the warning signs. Ignore the warning signs and it can result in death quite easily. Even at 35.
53, not shocking at all.

Aside from that it's very sad and still unexpected.

Once again, RIP.

Most of the ships and crews are based down here, (including Capt. Phil's) so it was pretty big news when it happened a couple of months ago. Discovery rented a pier and paid for a big memorial service for the crews. We did a package on it... I'll see if I can find a link.

As to the boy... I can't remember if it's the same one, but one of them was busted for DUI doing something like 100mph on I-5 not long after, so it doesn't surprise me the kid has a problem.

I missed the show last night, I'll have to try and find a re-run or something. I met him once briefly... seemed like a really good guy.

So very sad.

I have to say, I'm a consistent watcher of Deadliest Catch, and Jake's addiction didn't seem scripted at all to me. He looked authentically high in that scene. Keep in mind that the episodes are shot over a long period of time, and Jake may have done a good job of hiding his addiction (many addicts do).

And Jake's not that good of an actor anyway. So I'd say it's real and not staged.

As for Phil's stroke, anyone who's spent any time watching the show could see that coming. It's a shame, certainly. He struck me as a good-hearted guy who fought through some personal demons to build a successful business on the water. He will be missed by more than just the viewers of Deadliest Catch.

Actually, groveChuck was the one who said "Damn, a stroke at 53!?" I was just saying that anytime someone dies that young, its pretty tragic.

Ah. Regardless, I was responding to that. A stroke at 53 is no surprise. But yes, of course it's tragic. It's not like I'm young, I get it.

Couldn't agree more.

"Damn, dying of a stroke at 53!" is what I meant.
Not shocking as much as sad.

Sad they kept shooting, also, even though he wrote a note telling them to.
I guess that relieves the producers of any burden they may have (or have not) felt.

Reality TV makes people do the strangest things, even when they're dying...

RIP, Captain...
