A SAD day for my DVX100...need comfort

So I swore to myself that this would never happen to my dvx100b when i took it from the box. But it did...I was holding it by the bottom checking out a shot with a friend, and my other friend was kicking his soccer ball around and it smashed into my dvx...pushed it from my hands...it spun twice in the air before crashing into the cement.

THE BAD:
-The LCD is busted, bent, and broken off
-Viewfinder wont come on (even when I push it in that little knob inside the LCD control panel
-Not sure if any internal damage has occured because I cant see an image

THE GOOD:

-Body is relatively unscathed
-it turns on fine and makes the usual sounds.
-the tape compartment and play heads spin as normal when I open it.
-Lens is not cracked, perfectly fine---however I'm not sure if anything happened inside

Im crossing my fingers that the 3ccd censors are fine.

I have a 1 year warrannty on this...and it is still valid. Will Panasonic cover this? How much do you think it may cost? I had a hand strap on my hand, so I was using their safety devices.

Here are some pics:

It hurts in my heart and sends shivers to my bones. I'm suffering with you man. Ofcourse it's fixable. Maybe I can send some light over to you with my "invention" from yesterday.

wow dude that sucks! I feel your pain. No idea if this is covered. For your sake I sure hope so! Good luck. Your story has made me aware of the ever present danger of soccer players to my DVX.

I can guarantee you the warranty will not cover that damage to your camera.

I'm not trying to be mean. It is simply the kind of damage the company will look at and say "it's your fault". It would be up to you to prove to the company beyond any doubt that the hand strap failed. Something which will take much more time and money than it would cost you to just buy a new camera.

I feel your pain but...you've learned an important lesson about owning a camera.

You need to take better care of it.

You're on your own with this one.
That's like trying to get money out of a car manufacturer because you got hit by another car and was wearing your seatbelt.
Your warranty is to cover manufacture's defects not flying soccer balls.

Sucks about the camera, but it should be able to be repaired.

try hooking it up to a TV to see what the image looks like, I'd also try to record something and capture it into an editing program to see if the heads and firewire stuff is fine. You'll still need to get it repaired, but at least you'll have a better idea of just how bad the damage is.

I don't know the details of what happened, were you filming your friend kicking the ball, or was he just being a moron around expensive electronic equipment?

I'll bet you a nickel that your camera still works. Take anchoryanker's suggestion and try hooking it up to a TV. If there was any way you could "guess" your way through the menus until you got to display setup->EVF Mode and could set it to "on", I bet your viewfinder would still work and you could still use it.

Probably too much to hope for, but did you leave the on-screen-display option set to "on"? If so, you'll get menus on your TV and could go set EVF MODE to ON. If you didn't leave OSD on, maybe you could find someone else with a DVX and you could go side-by-side pressing the menu buttions, having them guide you until you get to turn the EVF on.

Does anyone know a good place to get camera insurance? :S
The cheapest insurance is going to be as an add-on to your home contents insurance cover, if you have that - at least it is in England. I was amazed that adding the DVX to my home contents insurance (which covers stuff anywhere, including holidaying abroad - and would even cover an unfortunate accident like dropping the camera) was only about 20 GBP - about 40 US dollars - a year. OK, I'm over 50, and not a professional - but what a deal!

what about warranty? nothing?

I feel your pain.

my dvx is dying. slowly but surely...from overuse.

Since your friend caused this check if he is insured against damage to other peoples property...if he is under a certain age he might be covered by his parents insurance....

Or.....just break his legs :D

If your friend was playing around and you him to becareful but didnt listen have him pay for the repairs. sorry this happened, ive dropped my cam before so i feel your pain.

yeah see if you can get the guy who broked it to pay for it. he should after all...

its odd, I put my camera up on a string in the trees and ski with it while rolling and i havent broken *KNOKS ON WOOD!* it. But some dooche comes along and breaks yours with a soccer ball...

I assume the cost to fix your camera is nothing compared to the medical costs your "friend" incurred for have the fully inflated soccer ball removed from deep within his backside orifice......:kali:

That sucks man.....
