RIP Charles Durning

One of my favorite character actors. Doc Hopper, Pappy O'Daniel... and for fans of Family Guy, Fracis Griffin.

I worked with him a few times in the 90's and he was as nice a guy as you would picture. Even in his mid-70's and not a slim gent, he was still light on his feet as a dancer! One night after work he came out with us and I sat at the bar asking him about his life and career. He showed me the bayonet wound on his neck from WWII (he was in the first wave at Normandy Beach). Might have to rewatch "The Sting" and "Dog Day Afternoon" soon...

What a guy. I first became aware of him when I saw "Dog Day Afternoon" first run. What movie. He is going to be interred at Arlington National Cemetery, a true hero. RIP.

Just saw the CBS evening news tribute.

'He would recall years later that he was hooked as soon as he heard the audience laughing'

Mr. Durning had a wonderful sense of humour, which is just about the most important tool you can have .. gets you through a lot.

RIP.
