Rim light/ hair light

Looking for a suggestion for a small (150 w max) light to use as a rim light/hair light. Something very light weight that I can put on the end of an arm off a C-stand directly behind/above the actor's head.

You could pick up an Arri 150, although I think a 300 would be more useful.

I use the Lowell Pro lights for this. They are small, light weight, focusable, have barn doors and a quasi-fresnel lens on the front. They are 250 watt, but I usually use a dimmer on one for a hair light. Hard to beat at $110. Have used them on the end of a C-stand arm many times. You might want to check them out.

Ditto to everything JBN said. I use a Pro for a hairlight/edge light all the time. It's a very small, handy light unit. However, it does pack a punch, so a dimmer is a good thing to have around. You can also get a 12V bulb and take it portable if necessary.

Another option would be the 200w MacLite, a focusable fresnel with barn doors for $185 at www.bmlighting.com. I haven't used that unit yet, but it looks like a reasonable light for the price.

You also might try to find an old Lowel tape-up kit (the original Lowel Lights). They have 5 tape-up fixtures and 5 sets of barn doors that fit an R-40 bulb. Invaluable for situations that don't allow room for a stand and arm.
The kit is about a foot square and 5 inches deep, packs easily and the bulbs are generally available (in aprrox. 3kcolor temperature) at most Home Depot type stores.
I use mine a lot with 300w floods and 150w spots for rimlights and BG splashes.
