How about the inevitable feminine ship's computer voice from any given space movie, as filtered through this site?

Reactor overload and detonation in...

this is scary how it shows your ip address. is there anything i can do to hide mine?

ugafan;
You can't really "hide" your IP address, as that's what gets sent out to a server when you request a web page. The server then uses that IP address to send the page back to you. Along the way, that IP address has many other uses.
For example the software that runs the DVXuser forum logs the IP address whenever a person makes a post. Mods have access to this information, allowing us to block IPs commonly used by spammers, etc...

As far as internet security goes, there are much more important things you can do to prevent trouble.

Use a router as a firewall/NAT to scure your computer - the website will only see the router's IP addres, you IP inside the firewall will be protected. Of course your router is still traceable. The firewall however blocks all incoming data, unless specifically requested by your computer (when you surf to a website for example), this really helps keep pests out.

And/or

Use a proxy to bounce all your internet traffic through.

like mikko said, your IP address is not exactly the most dangerous thing you could be sharing on the net. The only reason I can think of for hiding your ip or using a proxy was if you wanted to either do something illegal like hack a bank or if you wanted to circumvent a downloadservice like Rapidshare (in other words download pr0n or movies).

If you do want to hide your ip you have to use a proxy server or an anonymizer (pretty much the same thing). They function as mirrors so that the ip address the end site sees is the one of the proxy and not yours. Problem is good proxies are getting harder and harder to find and the ones that are out there are veeeeeeery sloooooow.

if you are worried about computer security want to know how (un)safe your computer is you should run ShieldsUP. It's completely free and will tell you exactly where you have holes in your security.

knowing someone's IP address roughly equates to knowing someone's cell phone number -> pretty much useless info

it's because on most forums (I'm surprised it doesn't do it here) words like "porn" or "p0rn" are automatically deleted much like if you write F U C K in this forum it ends up being **** or something like that (sorry to the mods for swearing, but I'm trying to prove a point here.

it's just a habit
