Right way of exporting to DVD?

What is the right way of exporting video to DVD format? I have Adobe Premiere Pro. I have used the " export " option with H 264 codec with high resolution. It has produced a 2GB mp4 file which I like.

I have tried to export it as a DVD format (setting MPEG-2 DVD) however it creates a 500MB file which is not as good quality as the mp4 file. I have set everything the way that Premiere would create the highes quality. Still it is not as good as the mp4 file.... What do I do wrong?

I also tried to convert the mp4 file into a DVD format and I ended up with a smaller less quality video...

Is it possible to achieve high quality via DVD format export and how??? What do I have to do?

DVDs are MPEG-2 and standard definition. Period. If you put an HD and/or H.264 file into Encore, it WILL be transcoded to SD MPEG-2 anyway. We all get spoiled looking at our HD clips and then DVD just doesn't look good enough in comparison. But we are comparing HD to SD, what do we expect?

From Premiere, use Media Encoder with the "MPEG-2 DVD" format along with a preset to match your footage, such as "NTSC Widescreen High Quality" or whatever is appropriate. At the bottom of the AME window there is a checkbox for "Maximum Render Quality" - use this with HD sources as it improves the downscale quality.

Adjust the data rate so your content will fit the disc. Search online for "bitrate calculator" and there are plenty, to help determine optimum bitrate for the project. For longer videos, 2-Pass VBR can be helpful, but for 90 minutes or less, I just use CBR myself.

If you are still truly disappointed with your DVD quality, there are alternative workflows using free third-party software. Google "HD2SD" and they will pop up. Tools include VirtualDub, AviSynth, and the HD2SD plug-in for those, along with HC Encoder for the MPEG-2 file. These tools are for PC only.

The other options are to burn a Blu-ray disc, or create your H.264 HD clips and play them with a media player device like WDTV, Apple TV, etc. and then you will have HD quality.

Does Adobe CS6 media encore any better at downgrading HD to SD for DVD? Anybody have a similar (HD2SD) procedure for Handbrake on a Mac ?
