Rig is insanely heavy

I've got an HMC150 and a redrock micro 3 adapter. Counterbalance with 2 4+ lb weights. With the LCD screen, batteries, rails system, matte box, follow focus, it now weighs in at 25 freakin' pounds. It's way too heavy for ENG filming. Any ideas/advice on what to do to lighten this beast? It's 25+ pounds. Redrock M3, redrock shoulder pad, 4 rails, follow focus, matte box, HMC150, counterweights, HDMI LCD, batteries... it all adds up. I'd rather be more spontaneous if possible, but dragged down by all that weight won't give me much motivation.

I'm not sure from the picture you've posted, but try using Carbon Fibre rods if you're not already using them.

Ye, +1 to moving all power back to your counterbalance and getting carbon rods. There i'snt much else you can do to reduce the weight on that setup you have.
I too have a heavy setup, mainly due to my rods. Also my FF unit is a MASSIVE hunk of machined aluminum...(Gin's newest FF)
Only other solution would be to start using a HDSLR for those "dynamic" movements.

Adam,

I have a couple of suggestions to strip the unit down. I would say remove the microShoulderPad Rod Clamp, attach the shoulder pad directly to the microSupportBaseplate. Then get 18" Carbon fiber Rails and run them through the baseplate all the way to the back where you can attach the counterweight. I would also try to slide the camera and m3 as far back as possible. This will help you counterweight the unit as much as possible.

Another option is instead of attaching the shoulder pad the the microSupportBasepate, you could attach it directly to the M3 which might help you balance the rig out even more.

Cheers,

Loren Simons
