Rich Robinson in 24p

Former Black Crowes guitarist, Rich Robinson, is currently on a solo tour promoting his new album, Paper. Rich stopped by Lampoon Studios to tell AV Squad about his transformation from the Black Crowes to solo musician, his new album and Cristina Aguilera. Afterwards, Rich performs one of his favorite songs from Paper, "Answers."

The interview and performance were filmed with a Panasonic DVX100 and a DVX100a set to 24p (F5) . The studio was lit with 4-ARRI 650s, 2-ARRI 300s, and 1-ARRI 150 using various difusion and flags. The audio was gathered with with a Sennheisser me66/k6 shotgun mic and an Azden WLX-Pro lav (The lav channel died during the interview and was only used for the performance). All clips below were edited and composited with FCP HD. The DVX100a footage (close-ups) was color corrected to beter match the DVX100 (wide-shot).

Thanks to Taylor Krauss for running the DVX100a.

Re: Rich Robinson in 24p

Jonathan, it's a nice piece but, to be honest, it's like every other MTV-style interview I've ever seen. I think we get programmed to looking at something like that and seeing nothing but generica.

It was a good looking and very professional piece.

Re: Rich Robinson in 24p

I agree, well produced but somewhat generic.

This comment really has little to do with your production and more to do with a comment Rich Robinson made. I’m not a big fan of Cristina Aguilera, but for Rich to make the kind of statements he did about what people will remember about whom years from now just tells me that he is buying into his own press.

Maybe Rich should have Cristina sing this song…

I think his point was just that music has become too slick and mass-produced, and that it needs to have personality and experience put back into it.

Re: Rich Robinson in 24p

the transitions between wide a close up interview shots were a little distracting. Neat and cool and all, but at the end of the day it took my attention away from what he was talking about.

The piece was produced very well, and the audio worked, for just having a shotgun for the interview.

I like your productions, and clients!

Re: Rich Robinson in 24p

I understand your MTV-esque comments; however, we cater to the 18-24 set a la Fuse, VH1 and eMpTyV, so I incorporate typical flash cut and ESPN-like camera moves, but I think our content is what sets us apart. A lot of our artists and music videos do not get aired on the cable outlets mentioned above.

The other aspect I'm constantly battling is scheduling/delivery/timing. I generally shoot the performances and host reads within a 2-day period and then an entire 30-minute episode is assembled in 12-hours. Therefore, the interview transitions and such become formulaic. Oh yeah... I shoot, book, digitize, edit and composite everything, also. It would be great to have more staff.

That being said, I'll continue to show you guys what it is we're doing here.
