Rhett Miller (Old 97s) in 24p (Sort of)

This week, Old 97s frontman, Rhett Miller, visited Lampoon Studios in the historic Studio 54 Building to talk about the dynamics between his band, his solo project, life on the road and the calling for music. After the interview, Rhett treated us to a rar acoustic performance of his single "The New Kid."

The interview and performance were filmed with the Panasonic DVX100 set to 24p (F5) and a Sony VX2000 (60i). The studio was lit with 4-ARRI 650s, 2-ARRI 300s, and 1-ARRI 150 using various difusion and flags. The audio was gathered with with a Sennheisser me66/k6 shotgun mic and an Azden WLX-Pro lav. All clips below were edited and composited with FCP HD. VX200 footage was de-interlaced, cropped (1.70:1) and color corrected to try and match the DVX100. See if you tell which camera is which.

hey i really enjoyed the live version of that, its a pretty kick ass song.

Re: Rhett Miller (Old 97s) in 24p (Sort of)

this is the second one of these shows i have watched, and i have to know: is this show always shot so dark?
the lack of light always makes me feel so claustrophobic... (and it's not my monitor).
i like dark for dramatic stuff, but the darkness just doesn't seem to fit the content...
the chick at the beginning is so dark i have to concentrate to see her! well, that's maybe a bit exaggerated. :P
maybe if this show was about up and coming vampires, the lighting would be more effective... no?
just my two bits...

Man,

You should let that guy know that there is such thing as singing classes.
Sorry man, that guy doesn't know how to sing.

Re: Rhett Miller (Old 97s) in 24p (Sort of)

Well, apparently, he's making a living singing. Guess you're wrong there, buddy. I actually think the song was pretty cool. Also, the falsetto was intended, if that's what you were referring to.

I'm curious if you're using a Mac or PC. I'll admit that the Rhett Miller footage is dark (on-line). PC viewers seem to report a darker image than Mac users.

On a broadcast monitor, the show looks bright and vibrant. In fact, I've been told that I shoot too bright; however, for some reason, when I compress video it comes out much darker than it really is. I use Sorenson Squeeze to compress my video and I increase the brightness by 10 and the contrast by 5. Perhaps, I should start increasing them more?

**This my 100th post! Hooray!***

i've never experienced that... damn compression! :-/

Ha! I just noticed that. I should have waited a second or two before cutting back to that camera. Oh well.

Thanks for the compliments, folks. They're always appreciated. I'll be posting performance/interview clips of Rich Robinson (Black Crowes), Reid Genauer (Assembly of Dust), and Yonder Mountain String Band, soon. We also have interviews with The Exit and Magnet.

Re: Rhett Miller (Old 97s) in 24p (Sort of)

Oh yeah... One more thing... The whole reason Rhett was in our studio was for another, non-AV Squad shoot. He interviewed author, Tom Wolfe, for a pre-recorded radio broastcast to air later this year. We filmed the entire interview, taboot, and we'll be editing that down by the end of the year.
