Rewinding tapes?

I am very new to independent movie making at the prosumer level. I have purchased the DVX100b for my first camera. I have heard it is bad for the life of the camera to rewind the tapes in its deck. is this true? What is a good alternative for rewinding and capturing? will it still capture in the same quality? Thanks in advance

IndieFilmer, congrats on your new cam! You will, i'm sure, enjoy it.

As rewinding the tapes in the camera itself is not a bad thing, it is common practise for users to rewind their tapes with either the capture cam,(cheap 1 chip dv cam), or a tape rewinder($39.00).

The purpose of doing this is to merely save time/hours of use on the heads & or the tape mechanism as it would be a rather expensive repair compared to a $189.00 capture cam.

Cheers

Hey IndieFilmer! , just so you know its not "bad" for the camera to rewind the tapes in the camera.
But it does dirty up the heads on the camera.
This is caused by capturing footage using the dvx or rewinding , & playing tapes. But you can buy a cleaning tape that cleans the heads on the camera.
Its best to capture your footage using another deck or seperate camera.
This can help the heads on the camera from being torn up.

Thank you both for the input! I feel much better now. There is soo much to learn I have a great journey ahead of me. I am glad to be a part of these forums, people like you make it a great experience. Thanks again for the help :)
