Hello,

I know a lot of you have seen my demo reel before but I have revised it a bit...some removals...additions, etc.

http://www.q-films.com/clips/demoreel.mov (Quicktime)
http://www.q-films.com/clips/demoreel.wmv (Windows Media)

Any comments/suggestions (if any) would be greatly appreciated. I have to give this to a Producer Thursday afternoon for a meeting.

I didn't know where to post this (Film or DVX) since it has mixed footage. Oh well.

Ciao!

Norm

GREAT reel man!

didnt see a bad shot in the bunch (which you hope is the case in a demo reel) and loved quite a few..

very impressive!

Very good man, loved it. I remember the old one and this one is even tighter.

Quick question, the shots toward the end, guy with gun, bulet time type effect and then what looks to be a bat like creature.. what are those from? Just wondering if there was a trailer or clip avaliable i missed somewhere along the way.

Anyway great work as always, keep at it!

Wish there was a special DVXUser version of your reel - with info on which camera used for which scene. It's totally awesome you reel. Very impressed and love the way you put it together. Makes me want to see more.
Best,
Kam
ps i'm in glasgow scotland for a month, any filmmakers on here around glasgow?

Norm:
Stuff looks really hot, everything has a good flow and trasitions well. The music perfects the flow and helps it really come together as a solid piece. I liked how you also showed your versatility in medium: documentary/interview, music video, and narative- definetly a good move.

I would like a bit more info or some longer clips of these shots you've so aptly graced us with, there looks like there are some fun projects in there. And please. please expose how you got those great slow motion shots (couldn't be a DVX).

Norm,

Phenomenal reel!

If I was nitpicking, I thought when the music picked up the pace the wedding shots felt odd, I would have put them towards the front of the reel.

Other than that, it was pretty damn impressive!

Chris

Thanks all!

Kam, I like how it's hard for you to tell which footage is 16mm and which is DVX! :) I'll just list which ones are DVX, and the rest are 16 and S16mm.

DVX Clips:

1) "Number 6" (dark film with the girl in the plastic bag)
2) "Devotion" (Mother/daughter...daughter seen infront of chainlinked fence and mother infront of mirror putting lipstick on)
3) The non-dramatic footage (dancing, wedding, etc...that's pretty clear that it's not film though!)
4) Crane shot of little lake in Newfoundland
5) Cuba shots (of Black man and little kid)
6) "Kill Me' The guy with the gun (green tint to the video)
7) "Monda Bizarro" The blue monster creature thing with the moon in the background

The rest are shot on film :)

DJDougyFrsh, the slow-mo shots are on from an Arri SR3...some 48fps and some 72fps.

Yeah, the wedding shots are odd in the whole thing actually! I tried at the beginning and it doesn't really fit either. I'd like to take them out but I want to shot in one reel the variety of things that I can do/have done.

how expensive IS S16mm, it looks AMAZING, I WANT TO SHOOT FILM!
although you've really pushed the DVX, did you use anamorphic?

film just jumps out at me. now If i could just afford to get my 16mm Bolex out of its damn box. :D

Coffee, that is from the amazing South Korean movie, OLD BOY. The soundtrack track #1.

Adam Powell, do you mean to rent a camera or to buy the film? Hmm, I don't know about shooting on a Bolex unless you want a specific "look". I would recommend shooting on one of the Arri SR series (SR1, SR2, or SR3)...or th Aaton, which I have not shot on yet. To rent a basic SR2 package, it's going to run you about $240/day. SR3, about $600/day. Film, well, standard Kodak 400ft rolls which is about 11.11minutes at 24fps is about $160-190, depending on which filmstock you wish to buy. Super16mm is actually cheaper in terms of filming, processing, and telecine as well. You get more for your buck than standard 16mm.

For the DVX, I used to use the anamorphic with it but even though I knew how to counter the lens focus issues, I found it very frustrating and just got rid of it and shoot/crop everything for 2.35. No one can tell the difference anyway, at least not on a TV or computer screen.

Norm,

KILLER REEL MAN!! Nice stuff, very pro. Why aren't you shooting big Hollywood features?? Nice job! ; )

Norm it was excellent!

I would consider pulling the wedding clip all togather, just seemed like a diffrent work style than the rest and stood out for me. The rest was so cinematic and film like the wedding made me think "video".

Hey Norm, the reel was awesome and very eye catching. The only thing I thought was a little awkward was when you went from a very desaturated clip to a very yellow clip around 29 seconds (and then going back to that same clip a little later). So just a thought, but maybe just for the reel you could make it less yellow. Great job!

really looks awesome....you have really done a lot of different things. I think you should probably keep the wedding shots in there somewhere to show your range. Great Stuff!!
