review not playing realtime

Has anyone had problems getting a realtime play back in vegas? It seems like even if i have it in draft-auto and resize it to a pea, it will still play a little slow at times. I see the frame rate go down for about a sec or two, just enough to make lip synching a pain. I have a 2.6 pentium with a half a gig of RAM, a Gforce 4 with 256 vidRAM. 7100 RPM drives. I even check off the effects so its just clean video but i still get the bog down. The ram previews work but it will look like its in synch and still the end render is off but only in places which is the funny thing. I try playing it to a monitor and the same thing happens. I would rather it drop frames to keep up with the audio instead of slowing down. When I set the slo-mo play back it seems to be in synch also and when I make the audio track real big and match it by the waveform it looks good too. I shot 24p reg. and dont use the pull down in my scene.
Any thoughts?

Yes. It's one of the drawbacks of Vegas, in my opinion. I think it's a better program than Edition, but Edition will give you smooth playback, even with a lot of effects applied (once they're background-rendered).

I hope this is improved in Vegas 5.

Re: review not playing realtime

Have you adjusted the "dynamic cache" (not by Vegas, not sure of the real name) size in the options. A lot of people complain about less than realtime playback if this setting is too low. I have a system fairly comprable to yours and I've played multiple tracks of footage with effects realtime.

i think i know what you are talking about. I tried to change that when i first got vegas but found it slowed things down more and changed it back. Ill try it again when I get home, maybe it was a fluke thing that made it slow the first time.
