Reverse telecine with 24p

Hi,

I have a potentially stupid "double check" question in regard to the capture of 24p capture at 29.97 for reverse telecine to a 23.98 FCP timeline:

We're doing a project that we would like to edit in FCP for 23.98. However, 24pA has a slight trail that has a bit of a look we don't like. Ideally, we'd like to shoot 24p instead of 24pA, capture at 29.97 and reverse telecine using Cinema Tools back to 24 for use in the timeline. Audio drifting is not a big deal since the audio has no sync. (One of those, you see exterior of house, but hear dialogue coming from inside.)

My question is, if we reverse telecine as in this tutorial here:
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/film_digital_video_cinema_tools.html ... will we get dropped frames or jittery motion? The target is television, NTSC (it's a promo trailer for a show the local news wants to do a story on), but it definitely has to have the 24 look. (We're trying to do it this way so we avoid this whole filmic visuals with video titles like you see so often these days.)

Thanks in advance!

I can't really answer your question, except to say that 24pA does have a very slight quality edge over reverse telecined 24p Normal. In Normal mode, one of the frames is reconstructed from a split/interlaced frame, so one frame out of four will not look quite as nice as the rest. Also, depending on how you reverse telecine, you might be going through a recompression cycle, which totally makes it not worth it.

Best thing is to shoot and capture 24pA and make sure FCP is properly removing the frames on the fly. What exactly do you mean that it has a "slight trail?"

Hi, thanks.

What I mean by "slight trail" is that when we shot in 24pA, I found it had a look similar to an old PAL > NTSC conversion. Though in retrospect, it's possible we had the shutter speed too slow.
