is it completely ok to tape over footage and reuse tapes? does anyone know how it is possible for the camera to do this? like technically. cuz wouldnt that be putting an image over an image and cause some kind of problems? i just dont see how this works.

You can tape over old footage, but it's not recommended especially if you are doing a paying job.

You will get some dropouts and the such, but most of the time it will work just fine.

If you reuse the tapes over and over eventually you will experiance some dropped frames (frames being lost). It happened to a few of my old tapes after using them 15-20 times. I have only had maybe 10 dropped frames in my experiance.

i guess it depends on what you're filming. for paid jobs i try to use new or like new tapes, with 3 or 4 passes on them. tapes are expensive, its just a matter of your preference on quality.

You should always use a new tape for all paying jobs and never tape over clients work because sooner or later they will come back and want their footage recut or something. Its just part of the job to figure in the cost of new tapes for each and every new job. Taping over old footage will cause problems soon or later with many different kinds of problems that can rise up and bite you in the butt. I had a problem when I first started doing video and learned a important lesson and since then I always add in for new tapes. Were talking just a few bucks per job and its not worth the time and headaces that it can cause and anyway the client pays for the tapes.

Hope this helps.

New Tapes, always. Unless its not something terribly important.

Especially if you are shooting something live, you can't risk having droppouts.

I test one tape and have more than 100 recording and the double of play and there are no dropout. The problem to reuse tape is to erase all recording.
Normally I save all original tape.

@ $4.99 a Panny PQ tape, always use new ones for clients. When I quote a job I usually put anywhere from $50.00 to $100.00 in the quote just for tapes unless it's a 30 second commercial, then I just add $10.00 for one tape.

When I first got the Dvx I used a tape to record then re-record just as I was familiarizing myself with the cam. After that, nothing but new tapes and never re-record.

tapes are expensive,

Tapes are not expensive. The PQs Steve suggested are fantastic.

Reusing tapes is bad for the camera, the client, and you. Sooner or later you will tape over something you needed.

I get my tapestock from taperesources.com

They have 63min PQs for $3.00
